I don' t care how tactical, deep and balanced a battle system is if it' s no fun.
It just felt boring. Didn' t feel like fighting at all.

Akira Toriyama is one of the most overrated mangakas/concept artists in the world. Dragon Ball was pretty good until Raditz showed up and explained Son-Goku was an alien. After that the whole series was garbage. Real garbage.
And his style is so predictable and boring. All the characters in Blue Dragon looks like his characters from DBZ. And everything he has ever done looks the same. I' m not saying that he shouldn' t keep his style, but even within his own style he is limited. Dragon Ball is the only good thing he has ever done. He lives on the glory of his past.

He did character designs for Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Ball Z was great, maybe you don' t like it because you watched the crappy censored and edited english version.

The uncensored DBZ had alot of great personality, there is too much crap censored in the translation, as you know a large amount of episodes in DBZ are spent between opponents talking shit. In the english version this dialogue is boring and pathetic because it' s edited, in the Japaneses version they would constantly curse at eachother and say alot of crazy bizzare shit that made you think " Wow these guys are really evil" , but in the American version its so dumbed down its stupid.

Example, a japanese dialogue that goes like this:

" After I am done with you I am going to kill your children and rape your mother like the whore that she is, you son of a bitch"

Looks like this in eglish:

" IM GONNA BLOW UP THIS PLANET ONCE IM DONE WITH YOU AHAHAHAHAHAH!"

So it lost all of its personality when it was translated to english, to the point where it wasn' t fun to watch anymore.

All the verbal and visual profanity (like characters flipping eachother off) was removed, all the gore was removed, and the dialogue was made kid friendly. That alone turned it into something completely different. Like I said, most DBZ episodes consist of people talking shit, and the shit they said in Japanese was awesome, in english it just sounds like two 10 year olds arguing.

It will get 6/10 in Edge, I know that much. This is actually true.

I read the manga that Toriyama created. Haven' t watched the TV-series which is made by a studio anyway.
Harsh dialogue hardly makes a good manga/anime IMO.
Dragon Ball was great because it had lots of humour, great characters, interesting world and the story was really interesting to follow. But when DBZ started it was nothing but screaming, fighting, reaching the next saiyajin level, shooting kamehamehas and panting with angry faces. That' s not good production IMO. That' s mindless crap.
I can see the appeal but when compared to other artists and their manga/anime I just can' t help getting the feeling that Toriyama lost his ways half way through Dragon Ball.

Are you sure about this, and are you fluent in Japanese? I myself am close to fluent (just don' t ask me to read any Kanji or shit), and as I know, foul words are almost nonexistant in the Japanese language.

Also, if you read such a translation from a fansub, then I can warn that fansubbers have a tendacy to exaggerate the swearings.

Unfortunately I won' t believe that there is such a line in Dragon Ball, unless you show me what episode, which minute and second such a line is spoken.

The ones that are for kids, yes. Commercial main-stream anime/manga sucks and I' m sad it has become so big.
But there are really awesome productions from Japan aimed at older and more demanding audiences but sadly they rarely get as much attention as they should.

My personal favourite manga is Lone Wolf and Cub (think it' s called Kozure Okami in japanese) by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, and it' s awesome.
It' s over 8700 pages of wonderful manga.

Kazuo Koike also wrote the story for Crying Freeman and he started the Gekika Sonjuku manga course from which famous manga artists has graduated, such as Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ½, InuYasha, Urusei yatsura etc) and the game designer and writer for the Dragon Quest series, Yuji Hori.

Goseki Kojima' s art is simply amazing and he manages to create a drama in every single picture in the whole 8700 page long series. Not a single frame is boring or sloppy made. Even a single rock looks like it' s full of life and drama.

A truly magnificent piece of art that everyone should read.

Still I don' t need to know japanese to see people head' s being ripped off and their bodies torn to pieces, or characters flipping eachother off, there was also nudity in the original.

Not every country has the same idea of what is appropriate for kids, I' ve been to places where its perfectly normal for 12 year old kids to go to a rental store and rent porn DVDs, if that happened in the US the store would be shut down the next day.

For the anime.

Dragon Ball kicks ass. Like Evil Man said, the show is terrible. For one thing it' s dumbed down and censored to the point where it' s not Dragon Ball. The other thing is. You' re taking a magna that is only 42 books (the french ones) and streching them to a few hundred 20 minute episodes. They basically had to take out all the good dialogue in the magna and make a hundred hours worth of crap.

Something that take one frame in the magna can take 10 minutes in the show, I' m not exaggerating.

None of that stuff would make an anime, manga or any production any better. But as I said, I didn' t watch the anime, I read the manga which is closer to Toriyama himself and I' m judging Toriyama alone as I' m critisizing his limited art style.

I love things that are good and I dislike things that suck.

I loved Dragon Ball until the Saiyajin parts began. The first parts of Dragon Ball are pure gold.
I might like Blue Dragon if the story and gameplay elements work but I don' t like the fighting and the over-used and limited art style of Toriyama.

There are both good things and bad things in both productions. I' m not the kind of person who either hates or love things. I can see both the positive and the negative.
