How important are graphics to you? - Aug 09, 2005 17:00
I' d say they' re pretty important, but beauty is by no means requisite to a game in my view. Nice graphics can help to immerse me in a game world but in the end it still all comes down to how much fun I' m having. However, this is not to say that I don' t drool over stunning graphics, because I do. I' m Just trying to add some depth to my character you see

Your thoughts on graphics?

It depends on who' s developing the game. If a game is developed by an independent publisher, then I don' t expect much. But if it' s made by companies like EA, Namco, or Nintendo, then yeah, I anticipate beauty.

Great games don' t need good graphics to be fun. But good graphics make great games even better and more enjoyable!

Yeah, like Super Mario Sunshine. The camera sucks, the story sucks, but the game is so drop-dead gorgeous, it' s one of my favorite games!!

Of course, I' m not superficial. Graphics aren' t as important as the fun-factor in a game.

Graphics don' t wieh in alot when I buy a game, but they can' t suck, ya know.If the graphics are subpar then I expect perfect framerates, etc...

If a game doesn' t have good graphics, it should capatilize on every thing lese.

I agree with the majority here, graphics don' t replace, but they certainly do enhance a good gameplaying experience.

I' m a graphics whore! If a game has over the top graphics, I MUST buy it! I' m not saying that' s all I buy, and that I don' t enjoy games with " lesser" graphics, but I LOVE reflective, bump-mapped, particle-filled games!

Anyway, before we dwell into more similes, metaphors, and other forms of figurative language, let me say that DOA wouldn' t be nearly as much fun if the graphics weren' t as good as they are....

If that' s the way you feel about DOA wouldn' t your statement pretty much would apply to any game? I mean, if you attribute graphics to fun (which is odd in my opinion, anyway) then wouldn' t any game' s fun factor be reduced by taking the graphics down a notch?

Take Metroid Prime. It ROCKS hard, but the graphics were an important part of that. Take away the awesome graphics, and it' s not Metroid Prime. It becomes something else. That' s the way I feel, anyway. It' s impossible to separate a game from it' s graphics.

If the developer is skilled enough, graphics can become part of the gameplay.

Take Half-Life 2 for example. It was a pretty average game (the whole half life hype missed me completely) but it' s gameplay was enhanced by the graphics engine it used. The use of physics and the gravity gun to solve puzzles/problems turned the graphics into gameplay.

Without the impressive graphics engine you' d have even less gameplay. I hope to see more of this integration of the two in future games. Prey looks as if it might be on the right track.
