Films That Pleasantly Surprised You - Jun 09, 2006 04:23
Saw ' The Girl Next Door' for the first time the other day and absolutely loved it. Originally thought it' d be another factory made ' American Pie' type gross out film as it centred around the porn industry and stuff, but ended up being quite a clever, witty little movie that darted off in a few enjoyable directions and had a handful of awesome one liners.

I know one or two people who aren' t that fond of it, but it goes to show how low expectations can be a blessing.

And Elisha Cuthbert is a Goddess.

Any films you' ve seen that pleasantly surprised you?

Yeah I remember seeing Elisha Cuthbert in a low budget canadian show for kids when she was younger. Seeing her in this movie is like seeing Big bird give Snffleupagus a blow job. But yeah I was surprized by this movie as well, I like the part where the guys were pretending to be porn producers.

I quite like War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. Apart from that, I can' t think of that many movies that have " pleasantly surprised" me. I know a few that have just surprised me, though.

I remember when i saw the first Austin Powers movie. Spy movies are really not my thing ( I absolutely detest James Bond), but it was the only thing in the theater i hadn' t seen, so i went, thinking i would get a couple a good laughs... maybe.

I laughed so hard my stomach was actually hurting when i left the theater.

Pitch Black

...i remember watching it on tv (between about a million commercials) and thinking it wasn' t much more than a typical cookie clutter horror/sci fi movie... ...somehow i managed to get the DVD, but left it unwatched (still in its cellophane wrapping) for around two years...

...last night i actually bothered to sick it in my x-box and was..

...pleasantly surprised...

...it' s actually a very good film, which takes those typical stereotypes and builds upon them... ...i really enjoyed the whole darkness/fear/primal instinct underpining of the story...

....i' m having difficulty trying to think of any other recent sci-fi film which is as good...

...anyone have an opinion about Pitch Black' s sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick?.... ....from the trailers, it looks like the director has abandoned all the cool themes and subtexts of the first film and decided to create some sort of sub-standard Flash Gordon save-the-universe crap[:' (][:' (]....

....is it worth picking up?...

No.

Pitch black was awesome, and the fact that it was a small budget Australian film makes it even more impressive.

The sequel is RUBBISH. Bad acting, bad special effects, bad story, bad dialogue, bad everything.

Heed the words of the Dragon and stay far away from this movie. Especially if you loved the first one. It' s terrible.

I was anticipating this movie for a LONGGGGGGG time, and I wass dissappointed in all aspects. This, and X-MEN 3 are the two most dissapointing sequels i' ve ever watched.

Crash.

I walked in not knowing much at all about it. And came out motivated and inspired to create my own videos again. I gained more respect for the little indie films. Even though everyone in Hollywood was in the movie, it was still a small movie. I rooted for it during the Oscars, I love the underdog, and it deserved it.

HEY, I liked the Chronicles of Riddick! It' s a modern " campy" sci-fi movie. Yeah, it' s not Shakespear, but it' s good. I didn' t have ANY expectations for it, though, so that' s probably why I enjoyed it. Hell, I guess I was " pleasantly surprised" ! Go figure.

V for Vendetta. I was expecting another rubbish Superhero movie full of Matrix bullet time and cliche, and it really blew me away.

The Descent - I was hoping it would be good, but it is the best horror film I' ve seen for about 10 years, and I love horror movies!!!

The Breed - some B movie vampire film that was on the Sci Fi channel last night. Actually had some really nice ideas, and the main characters were a black cop, a jewish vampire and a japanese female vamp. It was a hell of a lot better than Underworld: Evolution, that' s for sure!

The Matrix pleasantly surprised me. I will now give you the details of my experience and you will enjoy reading it. Here goes:

Up until the point it was released, I had super low expectations due to the fact that Keanu Reeves was in the movie and that the sunglasses he wore made him look like a bug. " Dis can' t be a gud movie yo" I kept thinking to myself. I had seen the trailer A LOT. Most likely because I was working as a projectionist at the time. Finally the prints came in and I assembled them. I declined to screen the movie, but I did thread it up for one of the assistant managers and a few of the floor staff to watch the night before release. My girlfriend (at the time) was also working in the booth with me that night. As all of the other shows shut down, The Matrix was the only one still playing. We walked downstairs and into the fabulous state-of-the-art auditorium just as the slow-motion scene of Keanu and his GF busting into the building lobby started. We watched that scene which was entirely in slow motion, then we walked out. I thought it looked cool as all hell. My GF thought it looked boring. I went ahead and watched the movie myself later on anyway. She also eventually got around to watching it. We both ended up loving the movie.

You will now gather all your friends together and regale them with my awesome story, much to their amusement.

Equilibrium. I thought it was going to be a so so indie film, but it was actually an awesome action film with a really cool premise and a decent message buried in there.

Hey, did you watch it last night as well? It was good, but not as good as V for Vendetta (I know Equilibrium came out first!)

BTW, was Equilibrium a british film? It was full of British acting talent!

It would have been better if the police had " Processed" that puppy as well
