The only thing I dont like about the old and nu XBox controller is the face buttons. I would' ve liked them to be pressure sensitive (they' re not right?), and a more ergonomic shape so they' re more comfortable to press. At the moment they stick out too much.




Both the Xbox controller and the Xbox 360 controller have pressure sensative buttons. The original Xbox controller and the Controller S weren' t very egronomic but the 360 is by far the most comfortable controller I have ever held. I sti and hold it while watching DVDs and stuff. It' s just fun to hold. It' s basically a pillow for the hands.

Y' know, it' s actually scary because i' ve been doing the same thing. I read your post jusst now and picked up my pad, and it is like a pillow for the hands.

I never liked the ps2 controller. I hated everything about it, especially the d-pad and the analog sticks. if u ask me, those 4 separate buttons do not make a d-pad. And the analog sticks, seriously I hate them. uncomfy and slippery (if ur fngers get wet when playing very engaging games, those that piss u off cuz they' re hard). But the d-pad on the s-controller never did justice either. I couldn' t use it for 2d fighters. it' s good for everything else, but not for 2d fighters, so now I play them using the analog stick. and it' s so much easier I swear :D

I personally don' t like the ps3 controller either, but honestly, if u stare at it and think how you would be holding it, it might be ergonomic after all, not putting strain on ur wrists. keep ur hands in a controller-holding position (without thinking about any kind of controller) and look at the curve created from ur wrist up to ur index fingers...see anything familiar? and look at where ur thumbs are, right where the thumbsticks of the concenpt ps3 controller are...

Anyway, I' m just sayin, it might be comfy for ur hands, even tho it looks weird.

well hey majik, when u play arcade 2d fighters, u have to use a stick and buttons. So when u play at home on ur console it' s the same thing almost (not as easy as the arcade machine sticks, but still good) Try it, and give it some time, you' ll get used to it. Oh and using the S-controller for the xbox is easier cuz the left analog stick is aligned with the buttons, just like in arcade machines. It works really well for me.

Yeah but in the arcades i use my thumb and multiple fingers on my left hand to achieve rapid responses. I, and i' m sure others can' t do that just with the top of your thumb, since the rest of the hand is holding the pad steady. It would be ok if i was a button mashing kid, but i want to be able to string complex combo' s counters and super/hyper/finishing moves.

A good D-Pad is all your thumb needs. Is it really too much to ask?

Playing two-dimensional games with an analogue stick will never be either as easy or as precise as a good D-Pad.

sony needs to take a leaf out of microsoft' s book. those little scoops in the analog sticks are a work of genius. even when you' re gaming hard, they just dig right in. jeez i hope they' re not gonna keep that new Chiquita-brand controller. i mean look at those little analog sticks. how am i ever gonna tool around as solid snake if i have to stop every five seconds to re-align my thumbs

ahahaha but he does bring up a good point, what' s always bugged me about the ps2 analog sticks. they suck.

Yeah, it does seem that while Nintendo invented them and Microsoft perfected them, by the time we have analogue sticks that are almost perfect, Nintendo is changing everything again!

Hopefully the pointing device will be spot on and make any clones/rip-offs stand out for exactly what they are!

Triggers?

The first controller with triggers was the Saturn analog pad. The first Nintendo controller with " triggers" was the Fisher Price Gamecube controller, and those weren' t really triggers.

Trigger!
In its earliest usage, trigger refers to a mechanical mechanism, the pulling or pushing of which sets a device into action. This includes the lever that sets off the chain of events that fires a gun, the release mechanisms on a crossbow, or the lever that engages an animal trap.

Today trigger is also used in a wider sense to refer to a precipitating cause of some event. The " trigger" (noun) is said to " trigger" (verb) the event.

Actually N64 had a trigger, but more importantly, the N64 pad was shown before the Saturn analog pad, but Sega quickly jumped on the wagon and beat them to market.

From Controller History...

After Nintendo' s demonstration of it' s upcoming hardware and pad, showcasing their killer app, Super Mario 64...

" Sony and Sega saw the writing on the wall: next generation meant 3D, and 3D meant analog. They immediately set out to create analog joysticks for their consoles. Sega actually moved so quickly on their design that they beat Nintendo to market in the US (though not worldwide)."

While Nintendo had come up with the idea and had working models, it seems that Sega was first to market with both an analog stick and triggers...

The N64 did not have a trigger. It had a trigger-shaped " Z-button" . There was nothing analog about this button. The Saturn analog pad had dual analog triggers like the Dreamcast and Xbox.

The kind of " trigger" you' re talking about is called " Shoulder Button" and exists since Super Nintendo - The Analog Trigger is the best way to play racing games (accelerate , brake) and since it' s shaped like a gun trigger it makes your killing experience much more exciting :) -but I have to say that pressing analog trigger for shooting is worse than Z-trigger - Perfect Dark was so cool with it , especially when you fired a pistol....

Yeah the first one was for Saturn (bundled with Nights was it?) , but Dreamcast made them official and proved the racing concept very well.

360 seems to have found the compromise - having bot shoulder buttons (work great for fighting games and others) and Analog Triggers.Actually PS2' s controller feels dated when you play a racing game.

That means that all those joy-pad' s will feel like shit after 10 minutes with revolution hehe ...or not :)
