I think the writer' s list kind of sucks, but at the same time I have never considered myself to be a hardcore gamer, maybe more like a middlecore/mediumcore gamer. Though, others would probably say otherwise.. That said, there were two items on that list that did apply to me;

You prefer playing against the computer

Is the only one that fully applies to me, and I have ALWAYS been that way. Always preferred playing against the computer. And I don' t think that' s something that makes you hardcore or not because not all games are built around the multiplayer experience. I' ve dabbled with the online multiplayer modes of games like The Club, Full Auto 1 and 2, Ikaruga, and maybe a few others, but by nature I' ve always been a solitary gamer.

You fondly remember a ‘golden age’ of gaming

This one is a little trickier because I do fondly remember what I believe to be the golden age of ARCADE gaming. I don' t really think console gaming ever had a golden age, but Arcade gaming, most definitely!!

This is a better test for ' old school' gamers not ' hardcore' gamers. Old ***s will love this test.

Why should something imitate a lesser object? That would be like if Ferrari made a care that looked like VW Beetle.

Actually online multiplayer is probably the main thing that' s kept me in gaming the past several years.

You' ve pre-ordered GTA IV but don' t mind if it doesn' t turn up on launch day

Well, this is close to the truth for me. I' m not going to the midnight release. I' ll pick it during the day. I went to the midnight release for Halo 3 and it was just depressing. The release of a game as a social event... it just hasn' t panned out for the gaming world.

That was pretty dumb. The only one that applies to me is that I can easily go without playing for days.

As probably the most senior (in years) gamer on here. I would like to joyfully tell you that only 2 of those apply to me. And yes one of those is the golden age of gaming!!!!

What the hell is a hardcore gamer? Someone who plays videogames while wrapped tightly in barbed wire with his eyeballs pierced and an XBOX tattoo on his scrotum riding a skateboard that is nailed to his feet down a super long, steep hill coated with honey all over his body through many large beehives and wasp nests that ends with a ramp that jumps over the Grand Canyon all while listening to Limp Bizkit?

I' ll pass, thanks.

There are two classifications of gamers:
-Casual gamer (plays games here and there just for fun, rarely buys games)
-Gamer (plays videogames fairly often and buys them as well).

Anything more XtReMe than that is just an uninteresting person with a likely underdeveloped personality. Nothing " hardcore" about it.

That sounded pretty XtReMe

Anyway, around 3-4 apply to me I guess. It' s kind of a ridiculous list though which makes me think that the writer is either ironic or just some newer gamer who doesn' t know better yet ;)

You quickly realise that, by today’s standards, those cherished oldies are now shallow, repetitive and not much fun.

There was a lot of crap indeed just like there is now. But it' s kind of ignorant to call ALL games from that period shallow and not much fun. Just to name Mario and Sonic stuff from that time. Those games are still very playable these days despite it being " less complicated" .

It seems kind of contradictory too when he writes that a hardcore gamer has a short gaming history. I always thought that having a gaming history beyond the Playstation kind of earned gamer credits :P

PS Just like Terry I do prefer to play against the computer in most cases. Probably because I mostly play story driven games I guess. And when I play I like to spend my time in a fun way. Nagging/insulting kids is just bothersome which according to the article makes me less of a Hardcore Gamerâ„¢ though.

Mmmmkay. You go right ahead.

Buy yourself some Xbox Live, or buy me a gaming rig, and it' s on. I never got to play with you in the Beta, you always had connection problems.

Only 2 apply to me

1 Yes board games are acceptable video games (mario Party?, games Workshop franchises, and *ahum* some xbox live titles)

2 - My PS3 is nearly getting as much love as my 360.

I would add another HC gamer trait - It was over a year ago when you actually stayed up all night playing a game.

That doesn' t apply to me :)
