2007 vs 2008 gaming (2008 seems even more promising!!) - Jul 13, 2007 09:54
now that E3 has showed all the major games for 2007, i' m thinking how the 3 companies will handle 2008. That year i think will be sony' s year, Microsoft is worrying its fans as i didn' t introduce any new ip or a seuquel to a huge blockbuster for 2008. Sony on the other hand has many huge exclusive games:

2008

Sony:

White KNight story (looks awesome)
Tekken 6 (this is tekken)
Final Fantasy 13 (awesome)
Metal gear solid 4 (awesome)
Gran turismo 5 (awesome)
Heavy Rain

Killzone 2 (awesome)
Wipeout

Microsoft:

Too Human (looks not THAT great)
Halo wars
Banjo
Alan Wake (looks awesome but still very mysterious)
Fable 2 (looks meeh)
Splinter cell (looks weird)
Unreal Tournament

Multiplatform:

GTA 4
Resident evil 5
Alone in the Dark
Burnout Paradise
Silent Hill 5
Soul Calibur 4
Legendary: The box
Civilization Revolution
Condemned 2
Turok
Indian Jones
Fracture
Dark Sector
Fallout 3

PS3 owners = 24 Potential AAA games
360 Owners = 21 Potential AAA games

2007

Xbox 360

Halo 3
Lost odyssey
Ace Combat 6
Mass Effect
Bioshock *
Forza 2 *
Project Gotham Racing 4

Sony

Oblivion *
Haze
Ratchet and clank
Little big PLanet
Drake Uncharted (awesome)
Unreal Tournament

multiplatform:

Virtua fighter 5
GRAW 2
Assassin' s Creed
Stranglehold
BIA
The orange Box
Call of duty 4
Army of two
Devil may cry 4
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Area 51
Sega Rally
Naruto rise of ninja
Pro evolution 2008
Time shift
Mercenaries
Rock Band
Guitar Hero 3
Clive Barker' s Jericho

Xbox 360= 27 potential AAA games
PS3 = 24 Potential AAA games

2007 is and will be MS year, though the number of quality games is almost the same , MS had some exclusives that blow ps3 exclusives in the water but over all both consoles has done a great job of delivering one of the best year in gaming, or rather the end period of 2007. At least 2 Great games a MONTH !! sweet year it is.

2008 however seems sony' s year so far, it delivers 25% more quality games than microsoft, moreover sony got huge blockbuster coming in 2008 that leave MS exclusives in dust. THIS IS THE SONY WE KNOW, should it keep this trend in 2009, MS should worry a little too much and i should worry a lot if i don' t get a ps3.

*= confirmed

I dont know if ' 08 will be Sony' s year. If they dont sell PS3' s during the ' 07 holidays, then I dont think it will be dominating in ' 08

While I don' t really like lists like this because they are so subjective to tastes, you did a pretty good job of remaining fairly objective IMO.

However, there are a couple screw ups.

1. If you are gonna say Ace Combat 6 is a potential AAA game, then Haze for ps3 should definitely be on there as well as its releasing in September 2007.

2. Ratchet and Clank are coming this fall 2007, not 2008, so switch that.

3. Sony also has Unreal 3 as a timed exclusive for this fall, and considering that game will definitely be badass it should be on the list. The 360 wont get it till the end of first quarter 2008, aka March or later.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it, games like Forza 2 and GTurismo have limited appeal to many gamers. So AAA games they may be, they aren' t as important to a console as others. But they should be on the list, and I' m damned happy they are being made cuz I love the hell out of them.

Microsoft' s weak 2008 line-up looks kinda weird. Since they apparently devoted E3 to this years games, I wonder what more they have for 2008.

Sony probably have a couple of surprises as well for 2008 but I think they' ve shown most of the stuff in order to show people, right now, how good the PS3 is.

Nintendo is not making games anymore I assume, since they' re not even mentioned in your post.

Gran Turismo is one of the biggest selling franchises of all time. Each game sells millions of copies in each territory. Gran Turismo is more important than every single game in this thread mentioned except for Grand Theft Auto 4.

Has splinter cell slipped a year?

Also i expect we will see new MS announcements during X07 and Tokyo. They have purposely kept a lid on things to keep the hype going for games coming this year!

Gears 2 perhaps? And what ever happened to Alan Wake?

If Huxley is released in 2008, it will be the best year in all time, *** it will even be the best year out of all time (w.t.f?). I' m so tired of waiting for this game that if they push it back to 2009 I think I' ll kill myself.

2007 is decent too. I' m excited about GTA4 (360), UT III (PC), TF2 (PC) and COD4 (360).

From what what shown at E3 most of Sony good games will actually be for next year in 08 so this year. MSoft has a good run since most of their games will be on shelves by winter this year so that gives them the upper hand this year. The Wii is good but with the many peripherals...it looks that now with too many remotes in the tv room there will be too many Wii devices. This year E3 showed me more of what i say last year, just more...so over all since i wasn' t there and can only read or see what is happening in the media, it didn' t impress much. What i will say is that technology in gaming has stepped up this year and 08 never can tell if someone comes out wth a new console, handheld or smthg.

If you can play UT 3 on your PC then you are an idiot for buying COD 4 on your 360.

Let' s not forget that if Sony can' t convince EA and 2K sports to get their sports games running at 60fps like the 360, then that will be a blow. I still can' t believe the devs are being such lazy f*cks and not getting the code running well.

That said, a lot of people buying sports games don' t know any better and won' t even think twice about which version they get.

It' s not the developers fault, PS3 is very programer unfriendly. It' s been refered to as a " mess" to develop for the PS3.

MS doesnt have a weak line up,you gonna get games like fallout 3 and expansion exclusive to GTA4 and probably NG2 that year too.
ANd perhaps GoW 2.
who knows. :P
But many games that will show up later this year.

Im still waiting for Cry on and Kingdom under fire, they might not be AAA titles but still something im getting :)

True it' s more difficult, but if devs can get games like Oblivion, CoD 4, Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Unreal Tournament 3, Motorstorm, etc running well, then a sports title should be a breeze.

Just because something is harder doesn' t mean its not possible, and it sure as hell is possible to get the ps3 to perform like the 360. They just don' t want to put that effort it. Hence them being lazy fucks in my eyes.

Well, as is always the case with multi-platform development, the console with the
most install-base and precedent gets priority, hence why the 360 version gets
more time in the development hanger whilst the PS3 takes a back seat. It was the same last-gen.

That and the fact that It' s so easy to port PC games to 360. It takes less time and expertise than it does with the PS3. Some people here seem to forget that a lot of the high profile games are PC ports. They make the raw game for PC and they pick away what' s neccessary so it runs on the consoles.
