Gears of War
-
May 16, 2006 22:59
I' m obsessed i know... I' ve seen a couple of people say that the gameplay in Gears of War looks simplistic and boring, but there' s more to gears than what has been shown so far. Specifically there are very similar squad dynamics to those in the 360 version of Advanced Warfighter where you can command your men to attack a target, hold position, move to, regroup, cease fire etc. The game will also employ the same ' down but not out' feature as GRAW when your team members get iced meaning that before you can revive them you have to clear the area so you don' t get killed yourself. Ofcourse the coolest thing shown at E3 was the melee combat, but there will be more than just chainsawing the enemy. You' ll be able to perform other melee actions with different weapons and i know the team have been looking at being able to shove a grenade into the mouth of an enemy ala Resident Evil (remake on GC). There will be much cooler weapons shown soon enough like an opbital platform known as ' The Hammer of Dawn' which i think Cliff has mentioned in a couple of interviews. Obviously you just paint the enemy and let hell rain down, but it will also be employed in co-op allowing for 2 players to use it at the same time on the same target to double the damage dealt. Whether or not it will make multi-player is uncertain. People who have watched the conference videos will have seen how the Bolo greanades work, but the most satisfing weapon will probably be the Torque Bow with it' s explosive arrows that can be detonated by the player rather than exploding on impact (should make multi-player interesting). There' s obviously a cool looking sniper rifle too but i don' t quite know how important it will be to the main camplaign seeing as most of the action takes place at a medium-close range. The gun jamming feature is cool and having to time the reload action with expending your last round should be cool and shuld make fopr some interesting moments and frustrating deaths. I just hope the main campaign is long enough. Adsvanced Warfighter was cool, but probably could have been a little longer. It was well worth the purchase because of the awesome online component and i probably would have paid the asking price for just the online and then again just for the main campaign, and with any luck Gears will follow suit with it' s 8 player online multi-player (only 8 because there won' t be a graphical drop like in GRAW to keep the framerate up). Hopefully it' ll also be 60fps if only online (which with no AI and only contained multi-player levels to process should be achievable). Check out this brief (30 seconds) but awesome clip of the multi-player in action... http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2650_en.aspx BADDASS!

With the jamming gun and other features mentioned, this seems to be a game aimed at changing the FPS genre to require more thought and attention to detail on the players part. Good!

Whoops, I file this game under FPS mentally because of the similarities it has with games of that genre. My bad.

Although I do like innovative games, one thing that is better than innovation (which can get boring and stupid), is taking a formula that is there and making it better. It takes alll the elements you like about FPS and moulds into what can make it better, I find the " if it ain' t broke dont fix it" formula better than the " if it ain' t broke, break it and pass something else off"

Why waste money on PS3, might as well by a cheap HDTV.. There are games i want on PS3 like Heavenly Sword but whether or not i' ll actually buy the thing at launch is something i need to think about because there are sooooooooo many 360 games that i am definately buying on their respective launch dates. If Too Human turns out to be the killer app it could be and Ninja Gaiden 2 is announced for 360 at TGS then i' ll be skipping PS3 until next year. I' m also buying " Wii" at launch with Twilight Princess so money will be an issue too.

That' s true, not to say that Heavenly Sword doesnt look like a good buy, but reputation dictates that Gaiden will be better, as it stands, I have yet to play a bad Team Ninja game. (If anyone says DOA Beach volleyball is bad, they can die...)

DOA Beach Volleyball is... badASS! Now could you put your sword away from my neck, please? There may or may not be framerate issues with Gears of War at the moment, but as long as it is not final, or an already finalized Japanese title, in which only translations remain, then I hold out hope. Let me make this clear - the game looks sick!

There are NO framerate issues now. There were in earlier builds but it runs smoothly now. It' s also not a Japanese game.

I agree with you Majik, Gears is certainly shaping up to be an awesome experience. I wasn' t really enthused that much about it until I saw the CliffyB demonstration. That literally blew my socks off. Not only does it look amazing but the stop and pop gameplay is a refreshing change to just running in there with all guns blazing. The way your allies communicate to you by shouting " I see three!" or " Two left!" gives that extra layer of authenticity. I think Gears of War should get an award for most badass protagonist ever. He has a freaking chainsaw for a bayonet! You know you' ve reached the pinnacle of badassism when you weapon doubles as something used to cut down trees. The winchester style shotgun also screams brutality.

I saw cliffy replaying GoW after the conference was no fucking lagg whatsoever was steady 30 fps. Then they playd MP was also 30 fps. NO LAGG AT ALL. People who say lagg or something likewise hasn' t seen the demo or when cliffy played GoW in e3. And if so dont speak about the FPS.

Multi-player should be 60 when the game is released but the solo campaign will likely be capped at 30 so that there is no slowdown whatsoever. This game will define 360.

I did not say that Gears of War was a Japanese game. I merely stated that unless games are finalized elsewhere in the world, I hold out hope for improvement. I' m glad the framerate is a non issue after all. Will check out E3 floor vids now.

It' s running at 30 but Cliff wants 60 for multiplayer and no visual downgrade ala GRAW.
