I' m obsessed i know...
I' ve seen a couple of people say that the gameplay in Gears of War looks simplistic and boring, but there' s more to gears than what has been shown so far.
Specifically there are very similar squad dynamics to those in the 360 version of Advanced Warfighter where you can command your men to attack a target, hold position, move to, regroup, cease fire etc. The game will also employ the same ' down but not out' feature as GRAW when your team members get iced meaning that before you can revive them you have to clear the area so you don' t get killed yourself.
Ofcourse the coolest thing shown at E3 was the melee combat, but there will be more than just chainsawing the enemy. You' ll be able to perform other melee actions with different weapons and i know the team have been looking at being able to shove a grenade into the mouth of an enemy ala Resident Evil (remake on GC).
There will be much cooler weapons shown soon enough like an opbital platform known as ' The Hammer of Dawn' which i think Cliff has mentioned in a couple of interviews. Obviously you just paint the enemy and let hell rain down, but it will also be employed in co-op allowing for 2 players to use it at the same time on the same target to double the damage dealt. Whether or not it will make multi-player is uncertain.
People who have watched the conference videos will have seen how the Bolo greanades work, but the most satisfing weapon will probably be the Torque Bow with it' s explosive arrows that can be detonated by the player rather than exploding on impact (should make multi-player interesting). There' s obviously a cool looking sniper rifle too but i don' t quite know how important it will be to the main camplaign seeing as most of the action takes place at a medium-close range.
The gun jamming feature is cool and having to time the reload action with expending your last round should be cool and shuld make fopr some interesting moments and frustrating deaths.
I just hope the main campaign is long enough. Adsvanced Warfighter was cool, but probably could have been a little longer. It was well worth the purchase because of the awesome online component and i probably would have paid the asking price for just the online and then again just for the main campaign, and with any luck Gears will follow suit with it' s 8 player online multi-player (only 8 because there won' t be a graphical drop like in GRAW to keep the framerate up).
Hopefully it' ll also be 60fps if only online (which with no AI and only contained multi-player levels to process should be achievable).
Check out this brief (30 seconds) but awesome clip of the multi-player in action...
