Dmc3 clearly was the best in every deparment. Dmc1 pales in comparsion.

Devil May Cry was better than Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3 was better than both of them.

The original is still better than most other PS2 games but 3 was a work of art. It' s bigger, looks nicer, has improved combat mechanics and most importantly it' s harder.
