Earth Defense Force X (360) - Aug 28, 2006 09:43

Already earning cult status on PS2, EDF franchise will be coming to japanese Xbox360 this winter in a shape of Earth Defense Force X; as always in this game you' ll be protecting earth from giant insects and aliens, this time with better graphics and hopefully online co-op.

The stills below may look sub par but the video below them shows gameplay and it looks awesome!

Hillarious presentation video showing gameplay

As one poster notes on the forum at Xboxyde, the game doesn' t stand a chance against Lost Planet, but hey, even Lost Planet looked so-so when we first saw it and this actually looks like decent mindless fun.

decent mindless fun

For next-gen systems and for next-gen price I expect more than decent.

That video was weird.. As in it totally freaked me out, so much that I can' t sleep..

WTF do the naked (bikini-clad) japanese women have to do with the game?

Why was their 360' s ring of power light off?

If you are going to watch this video, watch it with the light on and cover yourself
in a blanket..

I don' t think this will get as much of a graphical update as Lost Planet though..

Now I know where annoying anime voices get their inspiration from... If you
go to japan, it must sound like one long episode of Naruto.. They all talk the
frikkin same!!

Haha, we reviewed the original PS2 version almost 3 years ago! But the mechanical enemies in this version look kinda cool..

3 things the Earth Defense Force games have going for them: Destructible environments (you can level entire cities), TONS upon TONS of enemy insects coming at ya (The PS2 version had an almost endless amount of enemies coming at you, I' m almost afraid to think of what a 360 version with throw at ya), and GIANT Godzilla-like bosses to battle throughout the cities.. Part 2 was kinda cool cause they added some cool new weapons, a female soldier to the game and also they added a new locale: London.. But even with those additions I loved the original a bit more..

It' ll be interesting to see if the game keeps its low budget feel or if they invest some decent development dollars into it cause it' s definitely NOT bad at all.. With the ability to ride combat vehicles, unlock and use various types of guns, and just go crazy leveling the environment around you it should definitely make for a fun, arcade-like action-shooting game that I' m pretty sure will NOT appeal to many gamers due to its straightforward and simplistic gameplay. Also, the camera can become quite annoying at times.

I meant the squeaky women in the video that Majik put up... They sound like
foreign chipmunks.. They are half naked as well, so I suppose that deters from
theor annoyance levels... BUT STILL!!

No squeaky women in the PS2 games :).. Sound effects mostly consist of the monsters, NPCs running and screaming, and radio transmissions from home base.

I haven' t played this game. You' ll have to ask Terry about that.

I was commenting on the scary video Majk put up for download. Don' t watch it
unless you have a stomach of steel.

It looks like they' ve taken the video down. Kengo Zero is now in it' s place. Kengo looks good too, i just wish they had a 720p video...

Here' s what we rated the original. Written when I was still pretty damn green (like a frog) as a reviewer, now I' m just purple!

I was originally planning to review the sequel but never got around to finishing it so it kinda fell by the wayside unfortunately. But now with an Xbox 360 version due, I' m tempted again to take another crack at the PS2 review!! If I were to rate part 1 and 2 today I' d likely give part 1 a 6.6 and part 2 a 6.8..

If the 360 version supports multiplayer online play for more than 3 players then that will be UBER AWESOME!!!

Sadly, like the first two games I think the 360 version is likely gonna stay put in Japan.

I actually thought this had something to do with E.D.F. Earth Defense Force from the SNES Which I enjoyed a lot hope it is on the virtual console

Highly Destrutible environments ?
Those pics remind me of a city stage on a Saturn game called Ghen War I really like that that stage a that destruction.
