Memory and Performance
The PlayStation 3' s 512MB is split in half, with 256MB of GDDR3 RAM and the other 256MB in XDR. Yellow Dog can only see one of these two halves (which half, we' re not sure).

Duh.

There' s also a bit of overhead somewhere, partly to graphics, so the system actually only has access to 196MB of RAM.

On the bright side, my first ever computer only had 4Mb RAM and when I upgraded it to 8Mb I thought whoarr. And my favourite ever game ran great on that machine: UFO Enemy Unknown!

PS3, is different to say 360, like a 360 is different to a PC.. They all dont need as much ram as the other..

Just because one machine has less ram than another does not exactly mean it needs as much.

Perhaps that' s a disadvantage to the nerds who use Linux, but developers get to toy with 512MB of ram.

You need memory to be able to run programs. With such a small amount of memory you won' t be able to run very big programs, or very many programs at once.

I' m guessing that Linux doesn' t like split memory. So they are forced to use only CELL, which would also explain the lack of 3D acceleration. The missing RAM is probably PS3 os and other background things, which sounds pretty hefty.

CELL is such a bad design choice for a console CPU:

It' s expensive as hell.

Forced them to split the RAM because CELL needs high speed XDR Ram which is also too expenstive leaving them to use GDDR3 ram for RSX.

It' s not even general purpose, and it sucks for integer math and branch prediction.

If sony wanted to make a kickass console. They would have had a cpu of the same architecture as the 360 (since IBM developed the both CPUs) have 4 or 5 cores instead of 3 the 360 has, triple the cache and have unified Ram. While they' re are at it they could have ditched BR and improve RSX and double the Ram Instead Sony is more interested in selling CELL preccessors and BR readers. fucking ***s... If they wanted to make such an expensive console why not make it awsome?

Hey Ghost you should design a console and sell it to the highest bidder, you have a far greater understanding of what is required than the " Experts" at Sony.

Sony are well and truly in the mire now, linux users were expecting to be able to use the majority of the 256 now it looks like they would be better with a ZX81

Well it' s easy to say this now with the benefit of heinsight. I don' t think Sony expected xbox 2 to come out as soon as it did, nor do I think they expected it to perform as well. I' m sure when they were designing the ps3 they imagined they would have a performance advantage that coupled with the the fanbase for the PS2 they were more willing to take the risk and long term plan with BR and CELL.

However if they knew exactely what the 360 has when they designed the ps3 and that gamers are not sheep who automatically buy the successor to their favorite console maybe they would have designed soemthing more similar to what I suggested or if they want to make a profit something closer to the 360 even. I don' t think Sony was stupid just cocky and arrogant, It' s nice to see Nintendo and MS give them a wake up call. I doubt Sony will be caught with their pants down in the next gen (ps4).

Wouldn' t that be cool though, designing consoles? I wish I tried to get into advanced math in high scool so I could go into engineering....

Designing console hardware itself, no. Engineering is a pain in the rear for me. However, deciding what to put in, and making everything fit inside it the case the right way would be an absolute blast. Not to mention designing cases itself. I mean, yeah, casemodding is cool, and I' m not bad if I do say so myself. But imagine actually designing the box? Too Sweet!

You can' t compare different machines like that.

Using your logic, my PC with 4GB of Ram should ass-rape Xbox360 30 times over, but it doesnt.
