Its either the more sci fi setting, or the medieval setting.

What I have written in articles before, that defines the typical final fantasy kitase games and what its known for now is this:

Sci fi setting, with a blend of mythology from all around the world.

Romanticism is a strong element where nature plays huge importance, as well as the uniqueness about each place.

A typical Japanese way of telling a story, which you can compare to Akiro Kurosawa' s directing, as well as Japanese horror movies.. Some loose plot threads, and some unlogical mysteries that can be debated about for ever.

This way of telling the story is blended with old ways of theatre from the likes of Shakespear and Ibsen.

Ultimatly these games uses fable creations from the mythologies to become about saviour of the world, or achieving the unthinkable.

Always dialogues which are natural, and not cliche. I mean to say nothing in these Final Fantasy games are cliche at all.

Games always have a classic feel to it nomatter what. The theme is is respectably mature, with orchastrated motion picture, and themes and events which occures in everyday life for a normal person also.

Or at early FF games,sure its medival but it also has flying airships and machines,and robots,heck even trains.

Also as Sakaguchi said ,wedge and biggs as you can see in for ex FF6,FF7 and ff8. was in there for Sakaguchi is a big fan of starwars.
Many times its rebells againts an empire,as in Star wars.

I think FF12 (WHICH SAKAGUCHI NEVER DID) is the way to handle FF serie.

Btw the music for FF13 traler was horrible,i hated it.
The graphic and the train intro was very cool though,but that ... a girl who shots with guns...ahum...

I think FF10 is the way to handle it. And I just wanna put all the weight on it as I can: FF13 will become the president of America :P That means, take it to the next great level of gaming.

FF12 and 11 had tryouts for some functions that will be used in ff13, but ff13 will be IT, the big explosion.

I know Sakaguchi is a major Star Wars fan, and so is Kitase, he' s said so in an interview as well.

But if you look at those flying airships? What style are they designed in? Yes, medieval, like 12-15' th century, around that. Like old pirate ships and hollenders. The machinery they use here is also matched into this setting.

FF10 is my most hated FF game :S

Oh I love playing Counter Strike and all, and its definitly one of the best games I have as well. But I dont _love_ the game. An FPS can be great, but thats all, if you get me.

I personally think Oblivion is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated.

Okay,i kind of love the medival feel,and the fantasy setting,i love how i can make the charactyer i want,i love that i have a epic main story,while awesome sidequest,that can take up to 100 hours. :)

I love to rid into a city after done hard quest or dungeons,and spend the night at a inn,and visiting some shops and then listen to chattering NPC.

OB for me is worth its hype.

Its one of the best pc/console rpg of all time,if you ask me.

Btw baldurs gate,neverwinter nights and kotor deserves to be mention as some of the best games ever made,all 4 i mention now is also rpgs.

I hate medieval setting, its really depressing. Im a technology freak so I like feeling it too.

I hate sidequests, but love them when they are a few good ones and possible to get all done.

I also hate " forming my own character" . I want to have a great story layed infront of me to follow.

The things I do when Im my own character is just go raping women or breaking peoples wine bottles, beating up kids or something.

Okay,i instead did sidequest for getting enough money to be that knight who owned the coolest armor and bought diffrent horses,and gaved beggars gold,while saving the world :)
I also made the character look like me.

But yeah,sometimes linear is better then a open and free world.

However its like comparing a MMORPG to a RPG...

Wasnt FFIII the only Final Fantasy that didnt come to the U.S.? Or was it FFIV? Or am I totally off the mark?

FF3 was the only one who didn' t come to EU/USA,however a NDS version of the game is coming here.

However i have a NES,PSX emu that plays each game.
Trust me ,FF1,FF2 and FF3 is worthless today.
I never got " WoW" from zelda to nes either,but Mario on nes i did.

The only FF game sakaguchi did by the old ones that i love is FF5.
However i never played them when they came,so hard for me to judge,im not dumb i realise that a SNES wasnt a machne that could fufill your dreams.

Famitsu even celebrate Sakaguchi for what he did with airships moving on a worldmap as in FF6,saying its one of the best moment in gaming history.
But looking at it today,it feels like..what?! that was jst a ship moving over a pixel map.

FF3 introduce the job system, where you have to pick a definition of a character and select what type of things it will be able to do.

This system is now used by all games of this type almost.

Besides, in Final Fantasy VIII, you start with the gunblade, which is the coolest weapon ever made, and you dont even have to pay a dime for it, or do a sidequest to save up money for it.

Thats the principal I think of the great standard of Final Fantasy. While other games rely on you doing sidequests to earn money, to get items that are only half cool, but increase in stats, Final Fantasy is pretty much layed in front of you straight forward, with great designs and story elements.

The difference I think is that Oblivion lets you do all these sorts of stuff, and it has a main story that is alright, not the best. To be honest I think it sucked, but as a reviewer I would find some good qualities in it. Personally they could have just dropped the whole story.
I wonder if they have someone to actually write a descent story at all, or if they just put together a story that works like a small chain or a shadow, just to have a story sort of.
In Final Fantasy on the other hand, you have hired good writers that uses 3 years or more to prepare a marvelous story for you. Like a great book. And Sakaguchi also said that he just wanted to be able to tell a story

First of all i agree that gunblade is the coolest rpg weapon ever made.
However to upgrade and get new weapns in FF8 you basically had to change monsters into card,or play cards and make those into items...

Sometimes you could miss one itme and not upgrade the weapon to the character you wanted,that sucked,the junction system also sucked big time in ff8.

The main story in OB is cool,but since its just 13-15 hours long its nowhere near FF,however you do realise that OB isn' t about main quest?

I had done sidequest/dungeons for over 80 hours and being a levbel 25 knight before i started to do the main quest and i was celebrated by beggars as a thief who stole from rich late at night :)

The A.I who talks and sleep at night and close shop is the coolest ever.

Now its very sad that some people attack the A.I in ob and says that them speaking is the most retarded things ever,yes sometimes 2 people can gather up and say retarded things to each other,other times they discuss importent things,and you see them HUNT,or even Steal from others,or going beserk attacking others,btwback to beggar and how popular i was.

When the guards caught me and i tried to flee what happend?
The beggars all gather up and attacked the guards,when the guards then attackedthe beggars,some of the womens(elf) started to attack the guards,:)

It was just so fucking cool.

I seen guards at roads hunting thief' s,helping me when i got attackedb y them.

I seen 8 guards finding a portal out in the wilderness trying to shut the OB gate.
Btw i also seen guards attacking poor bandits who try and hunt Deer.
Apprently thats not allowed? :)

I know oblivion is not about a main " quest" , thats kinda what i tried to point out, and what I liked about Final Fantasy, that you have a brilliantly written story, not just a bunch of sidequests for money.
