Most realistic " graphics" ever found in a train simulator set for release on PS3

Official Railfan website (has trailer) This could NOT be done on any other console. They' re not using a 3D engine for the environments and are instead using HD video footage. I am really interested in seeing how this turns out as we could potentially see a new avenue open up and genuine needs for Blu-Ray.

interesting, though the prospect of a train sim doesn' t interest me in the least. But could they use the same idea with an on-rails shooter, like Panzer Dragoon... or would the camera moving screw it up... or what about a game like house of the dead, with only enemies renbered in real time... they could be really high quality... Ok still not very exciting... id have thought the train interior would look a lot better, as im assuming its about the only thing being rendered in real-time?

Why the HELL would anyone want to play a train simulator? This is so retarded that it makes my brain feel like cottage cheese. And people who collect model trains and dress up like train conducters when they play with them all need to be set on fire.

If they can fifure out how to get it [video] working panoramically then they could create some insane on-rails games and simply " paint" over the world and add things as they see fit. The great thing is that CELL would be ideal to handle something like that, leaving RSX to handle nothing but 3D models - meaning they' d be MUCH higher quality than in other games. As for Railfan, it' s obviously not on my wanted list, but simulators like this are big in Japan. I' m more interested in the technology.

Okay... but does this mean that as you' re pulling into a given station, you always see the same passengers doing exactly the same thing?

From the demo, it looked like you were sitting in the cockpit on the train mostly, and the video of the terrain will probably speed up and down depending on how fast you are simulating that you run the train. At various different checkpoints, we seemed to get a outside view from a camera wich were mounted outside the tracks wich we could see our train passing, and there were also a helicopter-view, with cameraes from a helicopter wich seemed to be following the train. I didn' t really understand the point of the simulator, the ' demo' seemed more like ' the making of-movie' .. But i don' t understand how you are going to control the train either, with only the controllers.. I assume we can control more than the speed of the train. It sure were confusing.. :P It would be interesting if someone who knows japaneese could fill us in if this is supposed to be a computer game, or a training simulator for people who wants to drive a train for a living, or what it supposed to be. :-/

Basically what they are doing is playing video and you can do cool things like slow motion, fast forward, and pause! You are extremely limited and it doesn' t make for a decent game. And they could do this on a DVD player if they wanted. Or on just about any console. Stupid.

I remember a game like this in Japan. I, uh, played it in the arcade when I was on an exchange trip. Kinda fun, in a very...strange...Japan-sy way. A major challenge was to stop juuuuuust right so you don' t off-shoot the stations and platforms... Then again, I' d love something like Grand Theft Train! Get the rushhour crowd and then head onto an unfinished route that sends them careening off the edge!
