Microsoft preparing to sue Sony? UPDATE: Sony explain... - Oct 20, 2006 20:14
Over this...

Ok, here' s a new one: with Sony' s announcements today they' ve issued a titled " Next-generation Console Comparison Fact Sheet," (downloadable here [DOC]) so let' s see some facts. First up, were you aware that to use your Xbox 360 Core system you' re required to buy the 20GB drive add-on, an HD DVD drive, a wireless controller, and an Xbox Live sub? We weren' t either. But hey, it says right there, " requires users to buy" and this is, in fact, a " fact sheet." Of course, none of that' s actually true, and what' s more, were one to use the Xbox 360 Premium console pack in that chart instead of the Core pack, the total would be $399 for a console with that very same hard drive, wireless controller, and Xbox Live Silver subscription (which provides access to everything but multiplayer) -- remember, kids, an HD DVD drive is not required to do anything but watch high def movies -- it has nothing to do with high def gaming. We hear Microsoft ain' t too happy about this chart either and is preparing certain legal action, namely because it could be misleading to otherwise unwitting retail employees selling customers game consoles this holiday season. Go figure.

ENGADGET

That' s what we libel.

Sony, on their " fact" sheet listed the 20GB HDD, HD DVD drive, wireless controller, and an Xbox Live subscription as required to play Xbox 360. If they' d said it in interview it would be slander, because it' s written it' s libel. It' s not legal and that' s why Microsoft can take legal action as Engadget noted.

I mean what modules did you do in your second year?

I keep hearing that Manchester University have one of the best Computing schools in UK. I just wanted to know if your course is any good.

I' m not at Manchester, i' m at Teesside.

Last year we covered:

Narrative design/storyboarding/script writing
2D conceptual Art/2D animation
3DS Max
Virtual environment design
Planning & product management
Analytical reading and industry analysis

This year we' re looking at the market in more detail, the production process, ethical issues, advanced 2D animation/3DS Max, advanced character design etc.

It sucks.

Oh Sony, how you lie through your teeth...

I think it' s a rather dumb dispute but I guess MS does have the right to sue. With MS' s history of court cases I' m guessing they will be the ones that win.

I guess Sony will claim it was a typographical error.

Actually y' know, looking at it again i don' t think they' ve done anything wrong. It just looks bad for Microsoft.

Take another look and you' ll notice, or should notice that Sony are comparing 360' s functionality against PS3, in that for 360 users to make use of the same functions Sony' s console ships with (next gen DVD drive, HDD, online access).. ..a 360 owner would have to pay for them.

I don' t think Microsoft can actually do much at all.

BTW, this is pretty much how Evil Man was comparing them. What he and Sony ignore is the fact that not everybody wants those things.

Actually I don' t think it looks bad at all. They are not comparing functionality, they are comparing price. It says it right in the title. Then they go on to tell you that buying all that extra stuff is required. They say noting about functionality, nothing about the 360 coming with a contoller reguardless of it being wired or not, nothing about the HD-DVD being completely unnecessary... MS is in the right to sue. I think it' s stupid still, but since they have the opporunity they might as well go for it.

Given the amount of lawsuits Sony had to endure in recent years, I doubt they' re getting solid legal advice from their legal department :p...

Sony: " We' d like to include a worm/virus in our music CDs that secretly modifies everyones' computers so they can' t copy/burn our music CDs, one that also cripples their registry dismantles their security. What do you think?"

Legal Department: " Sounds good to us!"
