Sony is in trouble with the tax man! - Jul 03, 2006 08:04
The hilarity never ends...

Ouch! The Associated Press is reporting that Japanese tax authorities have ordered Sony to pay an estimated 27.9 billion yen ($243 million) in additional taxes.

According to a statement issued by Sony, Japanese tax authorities found fault with tax payments related to profits from PlayStation console sales and profits from transactions relating to CD and DVD business operations between Sony and a number of overseas subsidiaries from 1999 to 2004.

The taxation bureau calculated Sony' s income in Japan to be 74.4 billion yen ($647 million) more than the amount it originally reported.

Sony planned on filing a protest with tax authorities, contending that " additional taxes would constitute double taxation under the terms of the US-Japan bilateral tax treaties."

Ofcourse they' ll file a protest, it' ll stop them from having to pay it right now.

Tax-dodging b*stards!

Incorrect.

Sony tried avoiding paying tax on the PS2 by releasing Linux for it and calling it a computer. That plan has been shot down by the European High Court already.

Sony are purposefully calling PS3 a computer to try and avoid paying tax on importing the machines into Europe. Stick in Linux and a HDD, call it a PC and avaoid getting taxed. It won' t work and they WILL have to pay tax.

Since it' s Sony' s game division beig taxed and they already owe a sh*tload to Immersion for patent infringement it' s already affecting PS3 as it means they have less funds to fall back on and the bad press will undoubtedly affect Sony' s share prices.

Nice read, I don' t know how I missed this. Makes so much sense now, but still this affects Sony and investors more then the ps3 itself and gamers.
