Ok Terrak, hit it!

EDIT: For worldwise i' ve got 360 at 11.2 million and Wii at 11.5 (not including Wal-Mart or online sales). It' s unofficial but good enough for me, ...we have a new market leader.

For the US, 360 is up 63% on last month, PS3 is down 18% and Wii is down 4% (not including Wal-Mart or online sales).

As for software, Madden taking the top spot is a no brainer, but more importantly the 360 version outsold the PS2 version by 253k (but i' m unsure whether they were released on the same day or not). Still, so much for PS2' s massive install base...

BioShock' s 490.9k figure is for 2 weeks, not the month and obviously as this is NPD it' s just in the US. It' s safe to say that BioShock will have sold > 1 million already worldwide. New IP, third party, huge sales. It' ll be dwarfed by Halo 3 this month but it' s good that it sold well, especially given that it' s not exactly a mainstream game.

Nintendo' s own software is still killing its 3rd party. It' s a shame Madden sold less than 127k and surprising that the original Xbox version outsold it, but i guess that' s more todo with the type of gamer buying the software than anything else.

Metroid Prime 3 sold well. 218.1k for a single week isn' t bad at all. It puts it right up under BioShock if you meet BioShocks fortnight. We' ll get a better idea next month when we can see the whole of September for both games. I wouldn' t want to take bets on which will come out ahead and we don' t know the rest-of-world sales but either way, this is 3rd party vs 1st and new IP vs established franchise. That alone says volumes.

I said we' d discuss it when it hit and Terrak has been patient. As long as we don' t have any fanboy garbage we should be ok doing this monthly...

Past 500k, all because of Halo 3.

October will probably drop back below 500k because there' s only PGR4 and Guitar Hero 3, but November and December will amost certainly be above 500k because of CoD4, ProStreet, Smackdown vs Raw, Assassins Creed and Mass Effect. Plus February and March will be good months, then we' ll be back down to 300k or so until a price drop.

Not really much to say, Wii taking #1 spot currently hasn' t done much to boost its games library, nor has it attracted any big budget third party titles. No they are staying on the HD machines, so though its great as a Wii owner Nintendo is doing so well with its new console, its not the shock & awe news i was hoping for. I' ll be happy when i see #1 position translating into significant boost in Thirdparty, but until that occurs i' ll leave bragging rights to the console with the most variety of games.

This holiday season we might see a shortage for 360 and PS3 (if Sony gives PS3 a price drop).

Well there is actual good news for Wii besides sales numbers. Recently the Gamebryo Engine has been customized for Wii. Having development tools tailored for Wii will make a big difference as Wii lacks programmable shaders. Effectively allowing developers to do more with Wii.

Agent , what do you mean by lack of programable shaders , i never heared that about the wii, you mean it has no shader model 2.0 or above ?

" Agent , what do you mean by lack of programable shaders , i never heared that about the wii, you mean it has no shader model 2.0 or above ?"

Yeah, it has no real shader model. The GPU is really basic. 4 pixel pipelines 1 vertex pipe 3MB VRAM (although unlike the PS3 Wii has easy access to more of the main memory). PS3 by comparison has 24 pixel pipes, 8 vertex pipes 256MB VRAM along with Shader model 3 compliance. In order to perform shader operations they have to use new tools and custom code to make it work. Untill better development tools exist, developers besically have to start from scratch every game they make in terms of having shader effects. So in essence, Wii can fake some Shader model 2.0 but forget about shader model 3.

That' s not to say it can' t have shaders, it just means that it takes more work to implement them. Even at that it' s still very limited because it just doesn' t have the muscle. GameCube (oviously as Wii has the same GPU) and PS2 were the same. I expect a lot more ports from PS2 and GameCube because of this.

You can think of Shader model as a universal emulator for special effects. They' re what make modern games pretty. UT III, Team Fortress 2, Oblivion for example are all using heavy shaders.

I dunno, I think all 3 consoles will start selling since the holiday season pretty much begins at the end of september

You make me wanna cry...

Bear in mind that i' m talking a single week out of four here. This months NPD will only have 1 weeks worth of Halo 3 sales (not including Wal-Mart and online) and it' ll still take the top spot. Why? Because 3 months ago they' d already had 1 million pre-orders in the US alone.

360' s sales will receive a healthy boost because of Halo 3' s 1 week sales but we won' t see the big picture until Octobers NPD figures...

Halo 3 might carry 360 (> 300k) through October, but then again it might not. October can be iffy and there' s not much else out. Guitar Hero 3 will selll but PGR4 won' t be a massive seller (ProStreet will in November through).

It' ll be interesting to see how Galaxy sells though, but it' s not out until November is it?

I doubt Mario Galaxy will sell extremely well like Halo 3.

I think Mario lacks some casual appeal. Lots of people grew up with mario but for people who arent gamers he can be seem like a kiddy game. Afterall he is just a fat plumber.

its one wii title im looking forward to playing.

how do people with the xbox and the wii hook up 2x component cables?=

I just cant help feeling times have changed since the last big selling mario game was released (not counting the DS version)

I think Nintendo made a mistake not getting a real mario title out on the GC. Sunshine truly felt like a kids game.

Time will tell, im routing for it though.

Mario game' s always change with the time. Galaxy is looking like the perfect hardcore / casual Wii game, it' s bound to sell well.

Even Super Mario Sunshine sold really well. It' s not in the top 25 but it still passed 6 million. Not everybody liked it but i thought it was the best platformer of the last generation.

I expect Galaxy to fall somewhere between Sunshine and 64, probably breaking into the top 25 eventually, but we' re talking about NPD figures so that doesn' t really factor.

Will Galaxy sell as well as Halo 3 in the short term?

I doubt it. Halo 2 sold 2.5 million on it' s first 24 hours and Halo 3' s guaranteed at least 1 million in the US alone, but i guess we' ll see...

What are those ranking charts?

Anyway, those numbers have been expected. 360 getting a huge boost through a price drop was obvious and I am also surprised, that PS3 managed to sell this good, 2 consecutive months with >100k sales.

Software sales are also pretty much what I expected. I am a bit sad Bioshock didn' t manage to take the top spot, but well. Btw. Blue Dragon sold 53.600 in August in the US.
