XBox 360 version 2! - Jan 05, 2007 22:52
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/05/the-second-xbox-360-revealed-codename-zephyr/

Ever wonder why Microsoft hasn' t released an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360, or whether the AV port was really capable of digital out? Well, here' s your answer: we landed pictures of what appears to be the second Xbox 360 -- the Xbox 360 v2, if you will -- codenamed Zephyr. (The original Xbox 360, if you recall, was codenamed Xenon.) The long rumored about and awaited update to the console won' t just feature a new, cooler 65nm processor, it' s also finally added an HDMI port for full digital 1080p pleasure, as well as a 120GB drive, just what the doctor ordered. The 120GB drive may or may not come bundled with the kit, we don' t yet know, just as we also don' t yet know how much a Zephyr 360 is going to run (we imagine it' ll go for the same price as currently so they can keep up a little on their expanding margin). But our very kind Xbox insider seemed happy to let us know we' d be able to get them " soon."

Microsoft already use the word zephyr for error reporting in server 2K5 .I doubt they would use it twice as a codename or product name.

Seriously. I mod 360' s, and this has some blaringly obvious " 3rd party" signatures to it.

This took me all of 2 minutes, so feel appreciative.

However, for the sake of objectivity...

I dunno quite what to think. On one hand, you' d be alienating an entire consumer base. You would be separating your consumers into 3 groups, (Having the Core edition was a stupid move already) one with Core, One with Premium, & one with " Zephyr" . I would of course be ticked, because I casemoded my 360, & you can' t sell modded stuff on Ebay, so I' d have to make money for it some other way.

On the other hand though, a larger HDD is going to be neccesary for the Movie/TV Marketplace service, there' s no denying that. And the market has been asking for HDMI somehow. I' m sure Microsoft will completely ignore the whole ordeal, so we can' t expect much from them in this regard. Only time will tell.

Werent there a few pics before of HDMI slots on rumoured 360s. I imagine MS will be building and testing HDMI 360s but only as R&D rather than to mass produce them.

Perhaps they' ll come with HDDVD bundles just for high res DVD playback rather than games, but the more they split their market, the harder it is for them to keep track of what consumers might want.

Never say never though I guess.

Sorta. There were pics of a 360 MoBo with a possible space for HDMI, I don' t remember it exactly, I wasn' t quite " tech savvy" back when the pictures leaked.

Yea that was it. That' s what makes me think that MS are making them but not necessarily for production...

This would be better than doing it the cable way.
I hope it' s a prototype and that they also add in HD DVD.
If you see weird visions of a salad dressing kidnapping your parents, it' s probably a bad omen, if so seek your closest Salad store.
Eat that salad dressing up before it kills your parents.
Note: Unrefrigerated salsa can get old pretty quick, if by accident you eat old salsa seek medical attention immediately.

Anything to increase that Huxley experience ey?

Hopefully Microsoft don' t do this, then I would have to classify them as dumb as
Sony in terms of important business decisions..

I mean they are already the same in every playing field except Media/Business
strategies, so if they do this, they' ll be known as Micr$h!tSony or something..

CES is coming!

" Anything to increase that Huxley experience ey?"

Yep, that and my 360 has some quirks.

Well it looks official to me.

At least, the HDMI part is.

Designing new motherboards and chipsets costs a lot of money. Microsoft aren' t doing this for shits and giggles.

Not sure why so many people seem to be bitching about it either. I' ve seen people demanding replacement units because they feel cheated. Hah!

Did Sony care when they released PS2 Slim?
Did Nintendo care when they released GBA SP? DS Lite?
Did Apple care when they released the 7000th iPod revision?

This kind of thing happens all the time in consumer electronics. As early adopters, it' s the risk you gladly take.

Yeah, but MP3 Players are a massively different sort of market, & it' s hard to compare a handheld that undergoes no hardware advances and this. You could get a network adapter for your fat ps2, and GBA SP had no extra ports & did nothing in terms of visuals, if anything I seem to remember it not being able to play certain GB/GBC games because of cartridge size. Dunno, maybe I' m just dillusional.

It' d be more like Sony releasing their 20 GB model, telling everybody that the next generation is here, and to buy buy buy for the holidays, making them think that it wouldn' t get better soon, and then releasing the 60 GB model with dual HDMI. Personally? I want to go back in time, throw in HDMI, & kill the 360 Core, but that' s just me.

Well no, I just meant big companies make a lot of stuff they dont release just to see how viable it would be. (R&D does cost a lot!)

A year after release is a little early so I can see why people would mind... I wouldn' t mind, I' d like to see how good an HDMI->DVI signal is compared to VGA on my monitor. VGAs colour is a little washed out compared to component on my setup... :(

No sign of the smaller processor?

Now that it might have Hdmi, can it do true 1080p?

If they replace the analog scaler with one that can handle a digital signal then yes Xbox 360 will do full " true" 1080p instead of what i' ve been calling " bullshit 1080p" .

True 1080p?
Like 1080p via component isn' t true?

Wtf?!
Hdmi is just one way to get 1080p,not the " true 1080p" -

No, like " native 1080p, or non-upscaled 1080p or like the console being able to pass an full 1080p frame. Digital 1080p or like the only way 1080p will be possible when/if HDCP and ICT are put into place for games and movies.

Xbox 360 as i said when 1080p was announced for the machine - cannot pass a full 1080p picture. It has to scale. That means that while they can scale to 1080p few people can take advantage of it as most HDTV' s won' t accept a 1080p signal via an analog connection. Component and VGA are analog, ...DVI and HDMI are digital. For TV' s that will only accept (and it' s most of them) a 1080p digitally, component and VGA don' t work.

To achieve a full " true" 1080p image, they would need to change the scaler from analog to digital.

The 1080p Xbox 360 currently has is nothing but a bullet point on their features list to match PS3. Only Microsoft fanboys are still arguing about this - unable to accept that Microsoft fucked up when they decided to use an analog scaler and had to come up with a lame solution that very few people would be able to make use of.

If there were some way that I could get it, & maybe only lose $100 or so, I' d do it, (that' s HDD and everything), but I' m not paying too much extra for 1080p. My new monitor can handle it, (I feel so technologically inclined.) but I could get so much other gaming stuff for 100-200 usd.
