360 To Use Blu-Ray? - Mar 27, 2007 06:13
Now this would make perfect sense on Microsoft' s behalf.

It' s not a question of if, but of when.

HD-DVD has been shot down out of the gate, & they know that. Even if they miraculously pulled out of the dive they' re in, they' d still have to slog through a long hard battle with Blu-Ray on even ground. Expect a Blu-Ray player to be announced in 12-16 months, with a release date a couple months after that.

Why are people so sure that the BluRay will win over HD-DVD. It' s still a tight race. The prices for HD-DVD drives will drop in April which will give it a nice boost. The winner won' t be determined with consoles, the winner will be whoever will reach the sub 200$ mark first. Price is the decisive factor here. PS3 might of had a larger impact on the format war except, they aren' t selling very well. By the time the PS3 reaches 30 million (if it ever does), the format war will be over. So far less than 1/100th of the market has been tapped.

The only reason MS said they would support BluRay IF it wins is to show that they aren' t as arrogant as Sony.

Like Rocky said. " It' ain' t over ' till it' s over."

HD DVD is garbage.

The non-garbage format will win, thus bluray.

It' s not rocket science. You' re pretty fucking stupid if you think otherwise. Seriously.

I' m not saying HD-DVD will win, I' m saying there is no way of knowing for sure at this point.

But way to go on being fucking objective. You don' t even need to support your argument, whatever you say must be true. Could it be possible that you bought a PS3 and thus already have a BluRay player? Wanting something to succeed and knowing something will succeed is not the same thing. You don' t seem to make the distinction too often.

Why would I want an inferior format to succeed? That is absolutely fucking retarded.

That' s like me wanting KIA to be more succesfull than BMW. Why? For what reason? So there are more shitty cars out there? C' mon, it' s just ridiculous. The only people who want HD DVD to succeed are Sony haters and/or people investing or making money out of the format, no neutral person with so much as half a brain wants HD DVD to succeed, thats why it wont.

Is that why Wii is outselling the PS3? It doesn' t matter what we want, most consumers are retarded and will never know the difference. If one is cheaper that' s what they' ll get. It might be a stretch for me to expect you to get off your fat fucking ass but if you actually look outside you might notice more cars like KIA, than cars like BMWs. And that' s not even a fair analogy because KIA and BMW are not even after the same market. HD-DVD and BluRay are in the same class, even if you think one is trash. Price sells.

Wii has things to offer that other consoles dont making it a vastly different product.

In my example I' m comparing cars to cars, not helicopters to boats.

The price difference between bluray and HD DVD isn' t as inmense as between budget cars and BMWs. If you could get a BMW6 for only 20% more than a budget KIA Rio - you are going to get it, it' s that simple.

HD DVD = KIA Rio
Bluray = BMW 6, at only 20% more cost than the KIA.

Bluray wins, no shit.

Like I said you have to be a complete fucking MORON to opt for HD DVD.

For the price difference to be worth it, HD DVDs players would have to be 80 bucks and the movies would have to be 5 bucks as brand new releases and that' s never going to happen. But who the fuck is going to buy an HD DVD player for $400 when you can get a bluray player for $500, cmon, no one is that fucking retarded. Who is going to buy an HD DVD version of a movie for $17 when you can get the bluray for $20 with possibly more content? No one, not that you' ll have the option since HD DVD support will collapse soon enough anyway.

Mark my words - even the next Xbox system will be bluray based. It' s the only logical option. Sorry HD DVD.

Inferior formats (sometimes vastly inferior, technically speaking) that won:

VHS vs BETA - Winner = VHS
NES vs SMS - Winner = NES
PS2 vs GC and Xbox - Winner = PS2
Mac vs Windows (back when both were new) - Winner = Windows
Film vs Digital Cinema (this battle is currently waging) - Winner (will be) Digital Cinema

These products were after the same respective markets and often even priced similar.

If BluRay is BMW, HD-DVD would be Mercedes not KIA. KIA would be DVD9. Now that BluRay isn' t limited to shitty compression codecs I agree that BR is superior. However the markets simply don' t work that way. The superior product doesn' t always win as Joe pointed out. Your average consumer won' t know or care about the difference. They' ll buy the cheapest. Why do you think HD-DVD sold more dedicated player than BluRay so far?

That' s the enthusiast market, wait untill the HD players reach the mainstream price bracket. As with everything it will be the mainstream that decides, not the hardcore enthusiast. That' s why I' m saying whichever reaches sub 200$ will win, if they both get there at the same time we' ll be in for a long format war.

It' s odd to see a HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray battle debate, without mentioning the companies supporting the different formats, so without me getting between the crossfire and guess which will win, I' ll simply DO THIS!

HD-DVD supporter:

Universal Pictures - The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Doom...
Nah, I' ll be fair. Universal has movies, such as King Kong and Munich

Microsoft - Duh!
Toshiba
Nec
Intel <- Biggest Processor manifacteur

Blue-Ray supporters:

Sony Pictures - Casino Royale, The Da Vinci Code, Spider-Man <- Shocking revelation, as I think of the Ps3 logo font
Disney - Pirates of the Carribean
20th Century Fox - Star Wars!

^
All three where the biggest box office winners of last year.

Hewlett Packard
Apple
Dell
Panasonic
Sony - Duh!

Also...

The only reason MS said they would support BluRay IF it wins is to show that they aren' t as arrogant as Sony.

...Microsoft aren' t so noble themselves, as they had intended to make windows uncompatible with Blue-Ray, as to secure HD-Dvd victorious, and the only reason they didn' t was due to the complaints from Dell and Hewlett-Packard (two of the biggest computer manifactuers).

Pesonally I prefer Blue-Ray, as I have a Ps3 and like to think Blue-Ray will be cheaper one day, so I' ll be able to use it as a Back-Up medium.

There are more movie companies behind Blue-Ray so... I think its going to win in the end...

Unless HD-DVD can convince some of them to make movies for them too... but as it stands right now... I' m throwing my lot in with Blue-Ray...

Still not going to by an HD system until like 2009 ish though... and by then the new in thing might be just downloading the video to an HDD... *shrugs*

Blu-Ray has more support from production companies, not just Sony.
HD-DVD only has 1-2 Prod. Comp. That are exclusive to HD-DVD whilst Blu-ray has, i believe it was, 3-4 the rest are waiting to decide for a definitive answer to the format war...

.: Therefore Above Quoted statement shall be LAW!!! lol

I believe sony' s format curse will kill them again! As far as i have read, all reviews have had the HD DVD as the format with best picture!

Some Sony formats (or ones that they heavily supported) that I can think of that didn' t exactly take the world by storm:

BETA
MiniDisc
Hi8
UMD
Memory Stick?
DVD+R?

Fortunately Sony isn' t the sole creator of BluRay.
