Sony knows that PS3s are collecting dust... - Nov 11, 2007 10:12
...so they are voiding the warranty of excessively dusty systems:

" I just got off the phone With PS3 customer support who kindly informed me that my PS3 is " too dusty" to be replaced under warranty. But won' t provide pictures unless they are subpoenaed."

It' s not like it actually attracts dust. It' sjust more visible because of the case colour/shininess.

Why did he feel the need to list the non-PS3 Sony products he owns? I take it there' s nothing wrong with any of them? And why the fuck does he have 5 controllers? And does his " entertainment centre" actually consist of three 42" + TV' s? And if this guys has a " dust-less room" - where did all the dust that destroyed his PS3 come from? And why did the customer support rep require the original sales receipt? Is that a US returns thing? Also, how does Folding@home figure into this? He says it auto-starts and runs all the time, and that' s why it' s filled with dust?

That is very interesting, I see no reason why dust should constitute a void of warranty, Obviously Sony needs to design the consoles better and get better fan filters. If i was him i would bring that case to the courts and have Sony try explain that to a judge. And im pretty sure dust does not constitute as an act of god.

Yeah, I think the Lord would send a torrential flood to take out the PS3 instead of... dust. I don' t know why they just don' t clean the dust, check that it works and send it back to him. Of course since it is already " out of warranty" due to the dust, he could open it up and clean it himself anyway. There' s no way he can void the warranty now.

The more i think about it, I cant understand how it could get that dusty, I mean i keep my consoles in my bedroom and i hardly every let the room vent :P So theres bound to be a tonne of dust, But my consoles never get dusty and my tv is always clean.... So i don' t know what conditions the guy lives in but he must never vacuum for it to get extremely dusty.

Haha, a flood seems more appropriate for a god indeed. Unless it' s so much dust that it covers continents and every possible crevice :P

I also think that they could just clean it out fast when they check the product. This was what they did with some satellite decoder we sent in for repair a few years ago. I' ve never heard a customer service use this explanation about dust before.

Why did he feel the need to list the non-PS3 Sony products he owns?

Maybe to show that he/she isn' t against Sony. Otherwise words like " M$ fanboy" or something similar could appear quite fast when others comment :P

I assume that this isn' t the official stance for all PS3 customer services though. Maybe something at that place only?

Dust voids the warranty? I see, better keep that in mind. Not that I have much warranty left anyway, but I don' t know, this whole thing sounds a little weird, like how did he collected dust if he himself said his room is dustless? Hmmm....

Thanks! I' ve been coming to Kikizo for a while. specially for the Itagaki interviews but I had never tried to join until now. I' ve seen some surprisingly mature conversations going on around here unlike most forums (sure, I' ve seen users like Johnfun in this one too) but I am glad I joined, I' ve found out lots of cool things here bout the games.
