Diff. Bet. 30fps and 60fps

This has become an increasingly intriguing phenomenon. But are there people who' s eyes cannot physically tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? I' ve experienced it here, some of my classmates can' t tell the difference. If you are one of those people then please, let me know your insights. Let me know if it affects you when you read about a games framerate in reviews... Anyway, here are some examples of 30fps and 60fps games: 30fps = Silent Hill 3 60fps = Fatal Frame 30fps = Splinter Cell 60fps = Metal Gear Solid 2 30fps = Sonic Adventure 1 (dreamcast) 60fps = Sonic Adventure 2 (dreamcast) 30fps = Project Gotham Racing 2 60fps = Project Gotham Racing 1

Those who can' t tell the difference are surely looking at the wrong aspect of visuals. Perhaps if you ask a non-gamer the difference in ' smoothness' they' ll look for jaggies or something. The difference between 30 and 60 is blindingly obvious. When in doubt though, it' s easier to detect if you look ' above' the screen and monitor the screen in the corner of your eye. If you put two screens together with one displaying 30 and one 60, it' s pretty unmistakable.

right on! I didn' t use to be such a fanboy of 60fps. But my brother convinced me otherwise. He' s still more of a fanboy though, because i enjoyed MSR and he wasn' t even interested in it. Definitely though, for racing and fighting games, 60fps is a prerequisite for us. It doesn' t matter that much for other genres. Still though, Splinter Cell would have been so much sweeter at 60fps. BTW Mr. Doree, what do you think was the graphical effect that took the biggest chunk out of Gotham 2' s framerate that they had to make it 30 instead? Coz if it was the hi-res anti-aliasing then i think that' d be a real bummer, totally unnecessary. My guess is that it was the self-shadowing on the cars.

Don' t know, probably everything combined. Overall when you consider how much prettier it is than PGR1 (go back to PGR1 and see how bland it looks in comparison) it' s no surprise the Xbox is being pushed. All I want to do is race around Times Square, preferably at 60fps, so GT4 Prologue is the current hard-on. However completing school mode is VERY VERY HARD so sometimes I go back to Gotham 2 to win a few silvers and golds, just to feel like I' m not crap.

Right now i' m really looking forward to Pro Race Driver 2. The screenshots are one of the best i' ve seen in a racing game. It' s got so many racing modes. Here' s the company line (i like the last part most): " Visually, Race Driver 2 is going to be stunning," said Gavin Raeburn, head of Codemasters' racing development studio. " Our new rendering engine features complex dynamic lighting, perspective mapped shadows, multipass textures, procedural standing grass, and a host of post production techniques including true motion blur, depth of field, and iris effects - all at a rock steady 60fps. "

Another example of this would be: Sonic Heroes PS2 = 30fps (Maybe less at times) Sonic Heroes GC = 60fps if you play the GC version then play the PS2, the difference in framerates will slice your eyeballs up.

BTW, Mr. Doree, do you know if Rallisport Challenge 2 is 60fps?

Well, to be perfectly honest, I just don' t care all that much. I liked Silent Hill 3 much more than Fatal Frame, and I liked Splinter Cell much more than MGS 2. I also think PGR 2 is a MUCH better game than PGR 1. So long as it plays great, I' m happy. It could run at 1 FPS.

Yeah, joke about that now. Use an emulator and ROM (only if you own the real game and console) and set it to run at 1FPS and see if you can play it. But seriously, SC was better than MGS2 (gameplay, sound, graphics, and depth wise, in my opinion) and it only runs at 30. I agree with fathom except with certain game types. I dont mind 30fps with RPG, Racing, or Sports. BUT, with shooting, fighting, and some action games, I believe 60 is best.

They say HALO is at 30Fps,PGR2 30fps,Splinter Cell 30fps.But these games are some of the best looking and tho most revolutionary games out there.I dont care if its 30Fps or 60Fps.PGR2 is way better then PGR1 and PGR2 is at 30Fps while PGR1 is at 60Fps.But there are slow downs in some if not all games that are running at 60Fps.

immortal: I was exaggerating, of course. The only point I was trying to make is that the FPS doesn' t mean anything unless the game is fun. If a higher FPS is necessary to make the game more enjoyable, than fine. If not, then I don' t really care what it runs at. And I' ve used emulators and ROMs. I know what they' re all about.

60fps just improves the in-game experience if you will. Titles mentioned above such as Halo, Splinter Cell and PGR 2 would all look/feel better with a greater frame rate. I' m not saying it bothers me, for instance Rainbow 6 (online) is one of my favourite all time games but if the visual package was expanded upon it would only do good for the experience.
