So, I have played the Playstation 3....
-
Dec 17, 2006 19:49
All I have to say is er-herm... . Firstly, the game I played is Resistance: Fall of Man. Wait, hold on.. the first thing I notice is the actual size of the thing, this thing is huuge. I thought my 360 was massive, and I thought nothing could top the X-behemoth, but PS3 just blew away the competition with its sheer physical presence. After spending 10 minutes woefully marvelling at the PS3' s bootylicious curves and bustling waist line, I turn my eye to the thing that matters: the games. Foremostly, R: FoM is a big disappointment to me, I know it' s a launch title this, and developers haven' t had time with the hardware that but my expectations wouldn' t be akin to the 2nd coming of Christ had Sony not turned their hype meter to full throttle. Surprisingly, Perfect Dark 0 looks a great deal better even with it' s over the top shine, textures and bump mapping - which is markedly better than washed out colours, lo-res textures. Considering how many calculations the Cell can supposedly do, it was very difficult to find destructible backgrounds, things like chairs and tables stood their ground against an onsalught of opposing and defending bullets, next I tried to shoot the walls... This is the kind of thing I think that I may have to go back and check again due to the sheer disbelief of a next-gen (now should be called current-gen) title missing such a feature, why are there no bullet holes created when you shoot the walls?? Even old-gen games have it, but why not Resistance? As I said, I' ll go and play it again, as I am shocked with disbelief. Also, it may have been the TV I was playing on (a HD CRT) or the incorrect component cables, or whatever, but not only did I notice that Resistance looks a lot like that game BLACK, but another customer came behind me and asked if that was the PS2? I pointed at the PS3. His reaction? " It' s a bit sh!t isn' t it?" There were other comments too: " What' s all that size being used for then?" Me: " The Blu Ray drive." " What' s " blu-ray?" Today, I am going there to play Ridge Racer 7... (Even though I have a feeling it will be horrid) just to know what it is like, but the game I am really waiting for is MotorStorm, because to be quite frank the whole PS3 thing is a big box of hot air and empty vessels (hypothetically speaking, really, it' s very quiet, surprisingly quiet, too quiet - impressive. ) This feedback was generally meant for people in the Uk/Europe who have yet to play the PS3. Does anyone on Kikizo, actually own a PS3??

The guys at Chips have a Japanese model. They don' t have Resistance but i' ve played RR7, MotorStorm and Genji, ...and i was actually pretty impressed with Genji y' know. It' s not all that fun to play and the controls aren' t perfect but the game looks better than 90% of what' s on 360 at the moment. I know what you' re saying about Resistance. The characters modeling, physics and weapon effects are definitely next-gen but the environments are disappointing. Compared to CoD3 [which is a shit game but a good looking one] it looks awful and it' s the ground and wall textures that let everything down. When you' ve seen the textures in Gears of War and CoD3 you expect better from PS3. As for you' re PDZ comparison, i both agree and don' t agree. PDZ is technically superior, in particular the normal and bump mapping [which is one of 360' s strengths] look better than the flat low-res surfaces in Resistance but PDZ looks so plasticy its unreal. For Resistances WWII setting the washed out colours fit, and i wouldn' t actually change it. Black is a good example though. When you lok at early 360 games like Condemned, Kameo, PDZ etc they all had an impressive at first, annoying later plastic shine to them. PS3 games appear to have relatively low-res textures and washed out colours, ...it' ll change later on, it' s just getting used to the renderer. I don' t like the pad, it' s worse than the Dual Shock, and i hated that anyway. I' ll be getting a 3rd party pad and if a game doesn' t need the tilt control i' mm probably get an adapter for a wired 360 pad or something. As for the size, ...if you put 360' s power supply in the box and added another big fan or two then it' d end up bigger than PS3. Remove PS3' s internal PSU, blu-ray drive and the fans, and then remove the dvd drive and fans from 360 so you' re only left with the things that work the thing minus the drives and 360 would still have more mass. It is more powerful though so that' s understandable... PS3 is big but size isnt an issue for me. I' m just concerned about the PSU being inside and the thing getting hot. I' m glad it' s silent but i' d actually rather it was noisy had an external PSU and didn' t get hot. Anyway, it' s primary function is as a Blu-Ray player and that works well and looks great. If only i could buy an add-on drive for £150 that would let me play HD-DVD via my 360 instead, that' d be awesome. I' d have the better games machine and be able to watch next-gen movies too....

I know Resistance is based around the WWII era, but, the washed out colours are too washed out. I thought Gears was a bland game, but when you actually play it, it has more vibrance than Resistance.. It' s not just Resistance either, CoD3 on PS3 compared to CoD3 on 360 still has washed out colours.. I understand what you mean about PDZ looking too plasticky, it does. Resistance could still do with a dab more colour, it' s borderline black and white and teeter-tottering over the edge. The store I play it in (CeX) have yet to receive a copy of MotorStorm, but I cannot wait to try it out. I hope it' s fun. The size of the PS3 isn' t a problem, but when you first see it, it stuns you as the sheer size of it just takes up your entire vision (exaggeration, but you get the point). They had a PS2 pad connected to the PS3 (somehow? I didn' t know you could use your dual shock on a PS3..), it still felt a bit awkward, especially the lack of rumble and feel of your weapons (I am a rumble junkie... I NEED IT!) I also still think BLACK looks a lot better than Resistance.. In the end, I think that the 360 had more variety and better launch titles than the PS3 has had so far, considering that within a month M$ had shipped to all three major gaming continents, and whilst the launch games were full of ports and rushed half-baked games, it makes the PS3' s launch look like a joke. That' s in America and Japan, there' s still the UK launch that Sony can capitalise on, which should ensure that it will be the console that launches with some of the best next-gen games (Heavenly Sword and... urm... er...?)

It' ll take some time for me to read all your insightful posts, but guess I' ll just put this little tidbit: why are there no bullet holes created when you shoot the walls?? Even old-gen games have it, but why not Resistance? Ha, bullet holes. Oddworld Stranger' s Wrath takes down EVERY SINGLE ARROW/PROJECTILE SHOT AT YOU OR THE ENVIRONMENT! Gawd, the amount of embedded arrow heads I had in a single showdown I had on the post I was hiding behind...

I' d pick big size over noisy console any day of the week. But those launch titles wont matter to me when the ps3 hits Europe, by then we will have Motorstorm, Hopefully Heavenly Sword [which I dont see making the march date, Lair will be delayed.] and a bunch of multiplatform games to choose from.

Foremostly, R: FoM is a big disappointment to me My major complaint about R:FoM is that bullets seem to be moving in slow motion. I can forgive any graphical flaws to a degree (hell I still enjoy a good game of Quake 3 or even Quake 2 for that matter), but it has to " feel" right. It' s not just Resistance either, CoD3 on PS3 compared to CoD3 on 360 still has washed out colours.. there were comparison shots posted at one point (showed the 360 and you scroll over to see the PS3, it was linked to in a thread Quez posted) amd the PS3 version of CoD3' s smoke looked lame and the sky had a white fog to it. But in all the games they had, the PS3 versions looked as if they were sprayed with a thin coat of white film or something, because all the games are lighter. And speaking of the PS3, anyone know of any updates on UT2007?

I don' t think the large size matters, games are really what I care about and until MGS4 comes out...I don' t think I will be looking into getting a PS3.

Kikizo Curiously, there is no soft reset button like there is on PS2, which means we have not yet found a comfortable way of changing from one game to another. Press eject, and like a PS2 game, the game continues playing. On a PS2, you could insert a new game and then press reset to boot it, but with no soft reset on PS3 we weren' t sure what to do other than hard power down, then power back on. On the debug, there' s no Xbox 360-style ' Guide' easy access via this controller' s central PlayStation button on the controller either, so no option to change game there. Write us if you know what we' re missing? ...didn' t you knuckle-heads consider a soft reset via the Controller, PS2 style?.... ...you know, hold down L1+L2+R1+R2+Select+Start.... ....i' ve never tired it myself (due to being typically too broke to afford one), but i bet you a 41" 1080p LCD that it works.. ..

[Update] Sony says that if you hold down the PS button for about four seconds during a game, you get a screen with options to quit and return to the main screen where switching games is easy; along with options to assign which controler is player one, player two and so on, turn off controller, or turn off the system. Incidentally, the controller can also power the system up in the same way too, so like Xbox 360, everything is super-easy. This was posted into the article the next day...

Resistance its an awesome game, really 9.4 out of 10 in my book, awesome plot, the coolest weapons ever, awesome physics, incredible online game, the voice acting its just first quality, everything runs super smooth even tho resistance has the most intense frames in videogame history, very intuitive controlers, 40 player multiplayer free of charge, Chimera/Human gameplay, awesome boss fights, great enemy AI, awesome co-op, huge maps 17 Gb of game, i dont know, it just feels good to play a 17 gb game on blu-ray. the only bad parts its that even tho the music its great there are very few tracks, the brits are sometimes annoying, the enemys look alike, all but the leapers, the stalker and few others, no online co-op. To me, Resistance its a great game, even tho GoW looks better, to me overall Resistance its a better game than Gears of War, and its like 5 times the game PDZ was, i cant remember how PDZ looked since i just got half way trough the game and sold it, but Resistance its alot better, PDZ was just lame, how can u even compare them, rith, u havent even played resistance. haa and BTW, Xbox 360 games available now: Amped 3 -----> just WTF its that??? Mr Sony' s wind-up cum dumpster toy soldier, do you get comissions on every sony product sold? And you chose to bash Kameo over Tomb Raider? WTF is wrong with you head? Is Ken' s penis really much bigger than we though, and he managed to addle your brain with it?
