Sega unveils new voice analysis technology - Mar 16, 2004 18:57
I wonder if any of this will make it into Shenmue 3 (if it ever comes out that is)

Tokyo (JCNN) - Magical VEngine is a real-time voice analysis tool that can work closely with facial animations to produce realistic mouth movements based on the emotions and feelings of an animation character.

Conventional voice animation technology reproduces mainly the vowel movements of the mouth, but Sega' s new technology can produce the consonants for a greater range of expressions. Magical VEngine drastically reduces processing time, enabling stress-free and efficient production of voice animation.
Sega plans to use Magical VEngine in interactive entertainment in the future.

That' d be cool for online games, but seems pretty pointless for a single player game...unless, of course, you enjoy talking to yourself.

Are you implying that there is something wrong with talking to yourself? Lol. But seriously, it would be cool for games like Rainbow Six 3 where you can use a voice communicator to issue orders.

Rainbow Six 3 already has facial animations when you talk. It may not be as advanced as this new technology but it is there. From the article it sounds more like something for NPCs to have more realistic facial animations based on how the voice actors look when recording, not for things like person to person online gameplay. I may have misunderstood though.

Yeah, I remember seeing that in Rainbow Six 3...pretty funny, looked like they were chewing cud or something.
