Does the PS3 have a version of IPTV? - Apr 05, 2007 17:56
A lot of fuss is being made over IPTV on XBL. I was wondering:

a) Is anyone here going to use it or is using it?
b) Is there anything like this on the PS3

I might have been interested in IPTV on the 360, if I wasnt getting Vista eventually. But then I suppose itd be like Live, once you' re signed up you can use it anywhere.

I imagine I' ll have my 360 hooked up to an HDTV eventually, and Vista hooked up to a monitor in the other room, so if I get IPTV I can watch it in both rooms... maybe...

But I' m sure there' ll be more choice in HDTV broadcast packages eventually, kinda like cable TV now. So I might just wait.

I really doubt IPTV will be a big selling point for the 360, so why would Sony even bother to get it also?

Because a single grain of rice can tip the scale.

You look like a scale.

I' m actually kind of interested to see how this plays out. I saw an interview with Bill Gates where he basically said the whole reason he wanted to get into the console buisness was to break into the IPTV industry. I don' t really care about IPTV but I' m curious as to what MS wants to show us.

SONY: I' ve got a Cell Processor!

MICROSOFT: Well I' ve got a bunch of cores!

SONY: Well I' ve got HDMI & a moderately large HDD!

MICROSOFT: As do I! And in black!

MICROSOFT: I' ve got IPTV!

SONY: I' ve got tilt functionality! And rumble.... I think...

NINTENDO: But I bring an innovative " blue ocea" -

SONY: Shut the F*** up!
MICROSOFT:Shut the F*** up!

I haven' t been following IPTV at all, but I do know this. Sony & Microsoft aren' t having a console war so much as a 5 year " Top This!" moment. If there' s any advantage, however slight, the other side is going to call it useless, or shamelessly replicate it & call it innovation.

Before 360 was released there were talks of it having DirecTV functionality, somthing that never actually materialized because of several factors.

IPTV will happen but it' s not going to be a major selling point. I don' t doubt that a lot of people will make use of it in some way, but i' d much rather Microsoft focussed on delivering the EU Video Marketplace before they do anything else.

Sony is unlikely to go the IPTV route, instead i suspect they' ll simply expand and build upon the Playstation Store offering TV episodes, music and movies through a service akin to iTunes.

I also suspect that Sony will work towards providing downloadable TV episodes and movies formatted for use with PSP.

But meh, if you a have a PC then what' s the point?

Isnt that a legal issue? If not they really dropped the ball on that one.
