BioShock - 360 lead platform, no multiplayer - Jan 22, 2007 20:29

" Many development teams have learned important lessons from previous attempts to bring PC games to the console, though Deus Ex 2 is an infamous example. One of the main things we are doing differently is that we are leading our development efforts with the 360. Therefore all decisions on HUD and gameplay situations are made on the 360 and brought over to the PC to avoid the situations you are thinking about."

Makes sense.

" There will be no multiplayer (hold on before you complain!!!!) but for a very specific reason. BioShock features a compelling storyline that revolves around the experiences of one man as he enters the decaying world of Rapture. Having a multiplayer component would have compromised the story we were trying to tell so we made the decision to keep this game as a single player experience. There will be an online component, however, where new content can be downloaded."

Super letdown.

For the kind of game it is I didnt see multiplayer working outside of somthign very very basic. The gameplay style and theme doesnt seem appropirate for MP. The only thing that concerns me is if the single player will have enough replay value or if it will be of decent length.

I don' t mind in the slightest. I' ll have other games for multiplayer, it' s not like we' re starved for online FPS' s. My view is that online play can save a game with a mediocre single player game but if the game has a superb single player experience I won' t miss multiplayer at all. Besides dedicated multiplayer games like UT 2007 would kill Bioshock online anyways. The reason Bioshock will kick ass is largely due to scripted events and story both of which don' t translate to multiplayer. Multiplayer Bioshock would probably be very similar to it is on Prey, just meh.

Deus Ex 2 flopped because it had to be dumbed down for last gen consoles. If bioshock will be designed around 360, I' m already reconsidering my preorder for it on PC.

Lack of MP doesn' t disappoint me half as much as that.

(I like 360 btw, but my loyalties have always lied with PC on these matters! )

I don' t think the whole game is designed for the 360, just the HUD. That just means it' s optimized for 16:9 and 4:3. And wasn' t Deus Ex 2 made for the ps2 and PC later in t' s life? The 360 isn' t nearly as crippled as the ps2 is compared to PC even considering the times. Bioshock will be one of the best PC games of 2007.

He talks about Deus Ex 2 as if the console version was hampered by being a PC port. But many people including myself believed that they had to make the world smaller and less complex because of harware constraints on consoles. (WTF was it with the universal ammo concept??) Furthermore, they really fucked up optimisation on PCs which meant it never ran well anyway!

DE -> DE2 is the game industry' s biggest tragedy... and I really hope it isn' t repeated with System Shock -> Bioshock. [:' (]

Just one less addiction I say.

I bought Prey last week, & I still haven' t played it between Halo 2 & CoD:3 online.

Why is it a letdown? I think I strongly agreed with the Gameinformer head Editor in last years August Issue. He was talking about how it is really annoying when he sees people reviewing games and downgrading them because they don' t have multiplayer capabilities. Not everyone is using multiplayer it isn' t quite standard yet, too many people think it needs to be. Also game always seemed like a Single player game Multiplayer wouldn' t work much.

Yeah, IMO if they would have given it multiplayer, that would be like giving oblivion a multiplayer
