Why is Sonic Mega Collection + a 12+? - Feb 06, 2005 16:59
I don' t understand. Being a Sonic obsessed fan of old I naturally picked up Sonic Mega Collection when it came out in the UK Friday. I forgot how hard the bloody Labyrinth Zone boss is on the original Sonic but one other thing surprised me. On the box the game is rated 12+ meaning anyone under the age of 12 legally can' t buy the thing in the shop and shouldn' t really be playing it.

Sonic as far as I' ve understood has always been kid friendly so I can' t understand why a 12+ has been slapped on the box. Sonic Advance 3 is a 3+ only because anyone under 3 is possibly too young to understand how to play a console. Is there some kind of law in the UK stating that anyone under the age of 12 can' t play old-school games or something???

Doesn' t the PS2/XB version of SMC have a couple extra non-Sonic games not seen on the GC version? That may explain the rating.

The Ooze (which I' ve never heard of) and Comix Zone are the only two I can think of which may effect the rating. But even so, they can' t be worthy of a 12 rating, can they? Being primative Megadrive/Genesis games and all.

The PEGI 12 rating is a guideline which I believe is set by the games publisher. There is absolutely nothing to stop a four year old (or anyone under the age of 12 for that matter) from buying the game.

Europe uses a different rating system to the US. As I stated earlier the rating is decided by the game publisher. They fill in a self assessed questionnaire and depending on the answers they give they come to a rating. The rating is not legally binding - it' s simply a guideline to help consumers to purchase appropriate games.
