Interestingly, hot on the heels of the report that the ps3 doesn' t scale 720p games up on older HDTVs, another report from Ars Technica finds that in regards to blu ray movie playback -
if you don' t have a set that does 1080i or 1080p, you' re going to be forced into 480p which is far less impressive. PS3' s lack of a scaler bites it again. 720p output is not available on the titles we tested.

My TV supports both 720p and 1080i inputs. So basically what this means is that I' d have to set my PS3 to 720p for games and then set the PS3 to 1080i for movies? Is there any way to get around this without having to mess with the settings all of the time and just have whatever is running in the machine be displayed at its highest possible resolution?

No. Your TV simply can' t handle the awesomeness of the PS3. Very few TV' s can actually handle all the supercomputer true high definition computations that the PS3 carries out every nanosecond. Most would just implode if they tried, resulting in a temporal vortex that will engulf you and your neighbours. This is simply a safety precaution by Sony. They' re protecting you Joe.

LOL sounds like something out of the sony PR manual In other words you shelled out for the latest in console technology (ps3), Now buy an expensive 1080p True HD TV to be able to truly ' appreciate' your new and expensive purchase. Older HD TVs are deemed unworthy of the honor of displaying the ' unprecedent' power of playstation 3.

If your tv does 1080i (which I know it does because mine is almost the same tv) then couldn' t you just set the PS3 for 1080i and call it a day? Why would you have to set it for 720p for games? Is it that you don' t want the PS3 to upscale a game to a non-native resolution?

Every " HDTV" supports 1080i.
If you have a 720p TV, the ps2 feeds 1080i image to it and you TV scales it to 720p.

couldn' t you just set the PS3 for 1080i and call it a day? Why would you have to set it for 720p for games?
Because the PS3 won' t upscale the many 720p-only games to 1080i, and instead will downconvert them to 480p or less.
