PS3 getting rumble!
-
Feb 27, 2007 20:33
Maybe. Not from Sony and not for pads. From 3rd parties and for " specific game function controllers" like steering wheels, ...according to super-dick Phil harrison... BIZ: A lot of gamers, including myself, enjoy the controller' s motion sensing at times, but we still miss rumble. If gamers want it and are vocal enough, will Sony reintroduce the force feedback at some point? PH: We have no plans to do so in the standard controller that ships with PlayStation 3. I believe that the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it' s not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is. And we don' t see the need to do that. Having said that, there will be specific game function controllers, potentially like steering wheels that do include vibration or feedback function—not from us but from third parties. LINK I guess we' ll see. There could be hope though.

I' m not sure. I know i read something about Sony hardware in general, including the discs. I' m sure that if it were as simple as having the code on the discs and 3rd party controllers that can support rumble, it would already have been done or brought up. But again, i' m not sure. To be honest, i' ve spent an awful lot of time playing PSP games inbetween the big releases on 360 and i don' t think i' ll miss rumble quite as much as i first thought i would. I mean, i didn' t even think about it when i played Genji and MotorStorm. I think shooters will be where it' s missed most.

No... it' s not that you don' t notice the rumble, it' s that y' know it' s there, it just amalgamates with the experience, so it becomes second nature. You will definitely notice when you don' t have the optiopn for it... trust me.

I think the sixaxis only feels light because theres no rumble. Weight for weight I thought the dualshock2 was about the same, but the lack of any tactile stimulation when playing really makes it feel dead in your hands... When it comes to immersion, every little helps....or is that Tescos...

In fairness I dont really notice the rumble anyway when playing games, I am sure I will find the ps3 controller odd though. I hear its very Light. Yah, it was very noticeable the day I cracked open my ps3. It did feel odd, but never uncomfortable. However, like most things, you become accustomed to it. Now it feels like the perfect weight, and seems as heavy as the ps2 controller ever was. In fact, the Wii sort of feels heavy to me now, as the wii-mote alone weighs more. In fact, when I tried to use my ps2 downstairs it felt really wierd because, though its a similar controller, it weighs considerably more, the joysticks arent as nice, nor are the R2 and L2 buttons, and then I realised how used to cordless I have gotten. So now I just play ps2 games on my ps3. I don' t know about you guys, but my force feedback controllers always wore themselves out considerably over time. My ps2 and roomates 360 controllers didn' t so much rumble, but buzzed after long term use. I actually disliked the rumble in GTA on my worn out ps2 controllers because it felt annoying to have the controller just sort of buzzing in my hands. I care about Force Feedback in steering wheels. They make any driving game infinitely better, and it is neccesary to have FF to make them accurate and enjoyable. Needless to say, I' m really going to miss having a FF steering wheel with motorstorm. My GT Force Pro works fine with GT HD, and I' m assuming would work for motorstorm as well, but the games don' t give any output for FF, so its just dead in my hands. If GT 5 doesn' t offer Force Feedback output for third party controls I will be severely angry. That said, I think Polyphony digital will have a lot to say in the matter. I know for a fact that they are serious about steering wheels for their games (as each ps2 game had a new wheel). Not to mention all the demo booths they have had always had steering wheels and racing seats. I just wish executives could admit when they don' t have something consumers want. Sure, motion control will offer developers more options than rumble ever could, but it doesn' t mean you have to write off rumble. I mean, at least do what the wii did. The thing barely rumbles at all, it sort of buzzes, but you don' t see people complaining. If buzzing controllers make people happy, just do it. As a final note, I liked the Rumble pack for the N64 more than any rumble controller so far. For one reason. When I got starfox 64 with the rumble pack when it came out, mine was malfunctioning. It worked, but it worked better than any other rumble controller or rumble pack I' ve ever used. It shook about 3 times harder than any other Nintendo or 3rd party rumble pack. It worked amazingly for two weeks, and then it went down in a blaze of glory. I still miss that wonderful overpowered malfunctioning contraption. When I returned it and got my new one, it rumbled so much less that I returned it and got another, and it was the same. So I went and tried a bunch of my friends out, and they were all weaker too. I don' t know what it was, but that one rumble pack I got with the game was wired wrong or something, because it ate through batteries and shook like hades.

Please stop saying things like this. If you want to start talking shit, don' t even get me started on the disgusting practices MS employs. I try not to even think about the things they do, because it is just that bad. Nintendo is honestly the only current console company that doesn' t do ridiculously stupid shit.

The truth hurts doesnt it? Sony wants people to believe they dont want rumble, they even said it wasnt possible in their controller. No one says more dumb " * than Sony!

If you even read half my posts you would see that I disagree with what sony has done with the controller. My point is, don' t start talking shit about brands, because it will develop into nothing but a flamewar.

If you' re going to argue about it, at least throw some information in there for good measure. Sony made a serious mistake in not settling with Immersion, but they made a bigger mistake when they clambered back up on their laurels after their big spat. Immersion has contacted them and made it very clear that there are inexpensive (despite what Kaz Hirai says) ways to include rumble into controllers that won' t interfere with Sixaxis. IF there is interference at all, which is still very debatable. It was bad enough them not accepting that they had been beaten down in the justice system by a monumentally smaller company. They tried to control the damage. Doing everything from adding Sixaxis, to covering up the real reason the feature was discontinued, to even trying to convince their fans that they actually didn' t want rumble, and that it was " soooo last gen" . I' m not saying watch Sony screw themselves again here. If Sony tanks, the industry takes a hit as well, but they could at the very least not be misleading about things like this. I' d definately be more satisfied if they had no response at all as opposed to the majority of their public-relations announcments.

will find the ps3 controller odd though. I hear its very Light. I played with a display PS3 today. The controllers not as light as I thought it be; imagine the old analog-less PS1 controllers. It' s about as light as that, and doesn' t feel too floaty. Although it was a little too easy to over-gesticulate with the Sixaxis thing.
