Why the hell do they region lock games to begin with? Is it for pirating reasons?

Because they never got laid as teenagers.
Unfortunately that' s the exact same reason that hardcore gamers import consoles from other regions... it' s a vicious cycle of deprivation.

I always thought it was so they can charge europe 50-100% more for everything and say that europeans ' value' things more as an excuse!

I believe its for more money rather than priacy. Piracy is nothing, but they just blame it for everything.

Looks like that' s the one great thing Sony did this generation. Do away with regional lock-out for PSP and PlayStation 3 games..
Wish the other companies would follow their lead..
