XBL Community Games Research - Please Help!
-
Jan 04, 2009 12:09
Hi All, I'm conducting a little research into consumer perception of Xbox Live Community Games. So far, Microsoft have not made any sales figures public, so a lot of us are making business without any figures to base them on. If you (and any other 360 gamers you know) could answer the following questions, both the XNA community and I would be very, very grateful! 1> Have you explored the Xbox Live Community Games Marketplace? 2> How many (if any) Community Game Trials have you downloaded? 3> How many (if any) Gommunity Games have you purchased? 4> How many (if any) XBLA titles have you purchased in the last twelve months? 5> What is your impression of Community Games thus far?

Hey Deejay. Not a problem 1> Yep. 2> Probably four or so. 3> None, but I tend to not buy minigames. 4> Maybe four or five. 5> I've never been one for party games, no less ones I have to pay for. Microsoft would do well to provide some "free" party games, making up for the purchase cost in in-game ad revenue.

Would you be more interested in 'full length' titles available through Community Games, say around the length of Portal?

1> No 2> No 3> No 4> 5 5> idk, guess i'll have to check it out lol I don't think I would be any more interested in 'full length' titles as mentioned. If the smaller game looks good and has enough content I will purchase it (for example one of my favorite XBLA games N+, while very simple, has about 50 levels and plenty of options)

The problem with community games is most are trash, and cost 400-800 points. For 800 points I could get a real arcade game, from a real dev, with achievements, live play etc. The only problem I have with arcade titles is that they seem to be moving toward the 1200 point range (portal, castle crashers, braid, etc). But even after trying out the most popular community games I would rather pay $15(1200 points) for any of the mentioned games than get any community game for free.

No 0 0 0 My personal, unbiased and well-informed opinion? Sorry not much help I know! I've downloaded a lot of trial versions of the XBL arcade games lately - SF2, Braid, Ikaruga etc. But I would never shell out £8-12 for a remake of an old game, let alone a community one. But if a community game made a big name for itself then I would probably check it out at least. I like the idea of the community making games and mods - but I tend to expect them to be free. The line gets blurry I know since even community devs work hard on their products, but traditionally, community efforts remain free.

choupolo Sorry not much help I know! Nope, it's all good, even if you've not gone near Community Games with a barge pole. It helps us all figure out how much we need to convert people, and what perceptions people have of the titles available.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Would you be more interested in 'full length' titles available through Community Games, say around the length of Portal? Absolutely. Moreso than the length of games currently provided. It feels like you're paying out the wazoo for a lack in content, and something that could better engage would incline me towards a purchase.
