PS3 Price Cuts Cometh... - Apr 19, 2007 21:40

" We are re-examining our [PS3] budgeting process in terms of pricing and volume. Sales assumptions change and the market is competitive. We are in the midst of revisiting our strategy for the PS3."

I can see a price cut happening before next Christmas.

Did you hear about the layoffs in SCEE? It wasn' t too many people, but it' s still worth mentioning. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=24232

Do you think it will be that long for the cuts to take place? I think closer to end of summer beginning of Autumn (Fall). They might do it to divert hype from the Launch of H3?

According to this link, Sony have no intentions of cutting the price. Which is a shame.

" PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn' t have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3' s price,"

Admiting a price reduction is coming would result in even fewer sales between now and then.

Even fewer sales, is that possible!?

Your initial quote was corporate-speak for ' these PS3s are not flying off the shelves as well as we thought (or as much as the wii) the only way to change this is to slash the price' . Personally I don' t think a small price cut is going to have any major change on sales for at least 6 months.

But haven' t UK shops already cut the price of the ps3 by upto GBP37 (or US$74)

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=6978

& they are already evaluating a price drop on top of this?

Yes I think you are right, but it doesn' t appear to be making much of a difference.

I believe the UK retailers are taking a hit in their own pockets in a bid to shift some stock. That' s totally different to an official price drop.

I' d get it if it dropped $100 & provided VGA support. This is half the battle for me.

Granted I' m not expecting $100. I could see a $549.99 PS3 though.

There' s a deal now at my local EB games trade in 10 games and be able to buy the 60GB PS3 for 399.99cnd, normally 659.99$. That' s an average of 16$ per game before tax, or close to 30$ if pay tax on the 399.99$ instead of the original price. It might be worth it for some people.

MS will drop their price as well if they do, there' s no point.

Maybe the price cut should be around October- November this year. Or could be right after summer between $50 or $100 difference.

$444 US bucks for a 60 gig PS3. I could find 10 cheap sports games to trade in. In fact, I could probably buy 10 games from them, sell them back, & still save tons. I' ll be seeing if my local store is doing the same.

That would be my prediction too: copycat price drops.

I can walk into a few places round Leeds and buy a PS3 for £400 or even a bit cheaper than that online. The fact remains that if sales of the PS3 don' t increase soon Sony is going to have to do something to get people to buy the PS3. They can' t even rely on GTA anymore... GTA 3 was the reason I got a PS2 back in the day but now I' ve a 360 I don' t need anything else to enjoy GTA IV

Sony never relied on GTA, the PS2 had the most games in last gen by far.

The GTA series did wonders for PS2 sales. The PS2 versions of III, Vice City and San Andreas rank within the all time sales chart top 10.

They certainly didn' t rely on the GTA games but they certainly helped, especially in the US.

GTA III was the tipping point for me. I had considered getting a ps2 prior to it, but when I played it I knew I had to buy one right away. I knew quite a lot of people who bought one when Vice City came out as well.

Personally with the Elite being released with it' s " improved" spec, I think Sony might have to rethink their strategy, I mean M$ are selling the Elite for what $480 against $599 (for the 60Gb), If M$ drop the price of the premium by $50 to $100 then if the Elite is using 65nm they can drop the Elite price meaning that Sony will have to drop the PS3 by what $100 to $150, just to try and compete, can they really afford to do that? They are going to have to do something and if they leave it to Oct or Nov, it might be too late.

If MS wanted to screw over Sony and Nintendo all they need to do is lower the price of the Core and Premium by 50$ each.

Something wicked this way comes for Sony. I can' t see them picking up on the beat that fast. Despite their recent performance, that' s still a major change in the way they do business.
