And I dont want to start a flame war, but RSX cant do the textures.
Actually that' s not true at all.
One of the biggest and most commonly used arguments against PS3 architecture is it' s RAM bottleneck which is a valid argument in most current cases, ...but only applies to non-UE3.0 based games that don' t use real-time texture streaming.
Instead of going on about multiple draw calls and running a fragment programs on the CPU i' ll simply assure you that it allows for far higher resolution texture maps than could normally be catered for, even through RSX.
RSX does have limitations when it comes to texture size and that' s why other games like Lair are using texture streaming and pre-baked directional light mapping.
As for Gears of War itself, it won' t ever appear on PS3. It' ll be released on PC, published by Microsoft and since Microsoft paid for the games development and advertizing campaign, they have the rights to first refusal for any sequels, ...which is to say that Epic
can' t take the franchise anywhere else without Microsoft' s consent, or without getting their asses sued for a ton of money.
My eyes right now are on the PS3 version of Vegas. If Ubi has had the PS3 variant of Gemini, the multi-threaded rendering system Epic created for the engine then we should expect it to match the 360 version with minimal graphical differentiations.
Bear in mind that it will benefit Epic ten fold if UE3.0 runs just as well on PS3 as it does on 360. I wouldn' t be surprised if Epic has people in Montreal assisting Ubi with Vegas.
