Advertising in Games
-
Mar 14, 2007 23:05
Just been messing about with Crackdown and I was alarmed to see an advert for the Royal Navy, in the Volks area. I hope this isn' t the start of this region generated advertising that companies (EA in particular) were talking about some time back. It really took me by surprise that a game with such an American theme, would suddenly have a Royal Navy advert in it.

I havent paid much attention, but in the American version there are Dell adverts in the Shai-Gen area.
I dont want to celebrate, I want to sell you hate.

Dodge Ram advertisements in the Los Muertos & Generic Chineese districts. I wouldn' t mind so much if we got five dollars off of the game because of it, but we' re still paying full price & still getting stuck with ads on the billboards.

I don' t think having real advertisements on virtual billboards in games is a big deal, if anything it adds to realism. However if your going to have things like commercial breaks during load times, or overtly pushing products (like game characters praising a product) then I got a problem. Yes, as Eddie said if i' m gonna be looking a advertisement through out the game i would expect the game to be substancially cheaper, hell if games were half the price they are now i wouldn' t care about commercial breaks during load times. However if i' m still paying the same price then i don' t want any advertisements at all. To bad i don' t have a choice.
