Oblivion (PS3 vs 360) - Feb 27, 2007 00:41
360 screen

PS3 screen

I gotta give it to the PS3 version, ...it just looks sharper.

According to IGN' s hand-on with the PS3 version there are other minor improvements too...

The PS3 version of Oblivion isn' t a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

Visual textures are much sharper in the PS3 version of the game.
The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can' t be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat.

Interesting no?

The biggest difference will be with the distant outdoor textures. Clearly this isn' t a sloppy port. Bethesda optimized Oblivion on the PS3 like they should have done on the 360 and PC version.

I was dispointed with Oblivion. I would pick it up cheap [again] for ps3 in a year or so for anything under 20.
Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.

Viva La Revolution! erm, I mean Viva La Wii!

I like it when companies do something with a years extra development time...

Huh. Well I' m pleasantly suprised. If PS3 can hold their own in the Achievements department, I' ll most likely buy this.

Its odd cause ign say one thing, while 1 up are saying another as far as the ps3 version goes with 1ups comments coming from the higher ups at Bethesda.[according to them anyways].

The PCs we saw SI running on last week made the PC version look like utter shite next to the silky smooth 360 version.

I dunno, maybe its the fact that i havnt played oblivion in a while, but the pic of the soldier on the ps3 version didnt look detailed enough on the face. It looked like he never even grew a beard so it looks super soft instead of rugged. It may be like that on the 360, but i dont remember it like that. Either way oblivion sucks no mater how you put it

Lol, I think I see what you are trying to do ginji.

As for Oblivion, a few sources have said that it seems more complete and polished on the ps3 compared to the xbox. Now, I could be all fanboy and say its the ps3' s hardware that makes it this way. However I would attribute it to the fact that they spent more time on it than the Xbox version, and polished it more.

This said, the ps3 is harder to program for, as the xbox360 uses DX and is fairly easy to port PC games to. So, I' m wondering, did they only spend enough time optimizing for the ps3 to bring it up to standard port specs(this alone would take a lot of work compared to the xbox), or did they keep going and optimize it even further than any ports we' ve seen so far and " kick it up a notch" as that fat bastard on TV says.

The improvements are minor but there appear to be quite a few. The game running smoother, loading faster and having a better draw distance is all due to optimization. The enhanced texture quality is also down to having more time to polish what was already a great looking game.

If they' d had an extra year from the 360 version it would have looked even better than this.

When the game comes out and side-by-side comparisons are done we' ll be able to see specifically what has been improved, and most importantly - whether and sacrifices were made to fuel those improvements (like Fight Night).

What i will say is that while it' s cool people who haven' t got a 360 will get to play it on PS3, ...there are some of us that have been playing this for a year already and no slight improvements like these would have been worth an extra years development on 360...

In other words, it' s not entirely fair to compare these two versions of Oblivion side by side; since it' s not entirely because of any superior hardware.

The real heat comes out when the next wave of multi-platform games comes out this year. I' ll be looking at Assasin' s Creed mostly.

Even that won' t be a fair comparison though because not only is Ubisoft Microsoft sympathetic but 360 is the lead development platform.

360' s " power" is far more accessible, and whereas RSX should be simple enough for devs to get to grips with, CELL is as complex as PS2 architecture meaning that there' s a relatively steep learning curve. What that translates to is a slower graphical evolution whereby each generation of games will look progressively better and better, just like on PS2.

Right now only the best developers will be able to get great results from PS3, and many of those games (Lair, Heavenly Sword, Sigma etc) have already been delayed, requiring additional development time.

But meh, the best games from the best developers on 360 will look better than their PS3 equivalents.

With regard to Oblivion, is anybody actually still playing it, and will anybody be getting Shivering Isles?!

I recently started playing it again. Seems each time I restart I find somthing more or somthing different to do. I regret restarting cause I never fully develope my character. I wanna start buying shops and what not since I have yet to reach the level required yet.

Once my computer upgrades arriv ehowever I may jump ship to the PC version just so I can add even more to the vast gaming with some mods. Like Morrowind I will probably keep going back to this game again and again, even more so now with the PC version.

I read (i think at IGN) that the xbox 360 version is also goin to get smoother textures like the ps3 one through a later update ..

Wasn' t there suppose to be this mega Oblivion edition that had pretty much all the ' critical' updates along with Shivering Isles expansion for the 360?

Would that version look better than the earlier copies that weren' t bought AFTER the developers had time to fix the bugs and optimize?

Probably a Game of the Year edition type deal like they had with Morrowind for Xbox. It included the 2 additonal major expansions dunno about bug fixes and optimization tho.

But with Xbox Live now better implented and patches now easily made available I dont think theyd need to do such a thing. Tho they could. However Shivering Isle has already been announced as downloadable content as well as retail.
