My friends, gather round for I think I have the answer that explains all of Sony' s screw ups. The theory goes like this; Sony is trying to do everything completely illogical and the opposite of what we would expect, so that when they do things right in a few months time, it will seem that much more amazing. It' s the only way to explain it! or, maybe they just have some major f*ck ups in charge. Is it really that hard to do things the right way, and listen to customers?

PS2 emulation will be a hell of a lot easier than Xbox emulation, and like i said, through software emulation they should easily be able to render in HD resolutions like 360. My only concern is that it' ll be impossible to support every game in the library without having to work on games individually and release periodic updates like Microsoft. I' m not convinced they' ll do that. I kinda think they' re trying to do too much simultaneously. Using a hardware solution was a nice way of achieving 1:1 backwards compatibility for 98% of the catalog. Going software means more work, more problems, more complaints etc.

As choupolo said, I don' t see how this saves them money. Manufacturing methods for the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesizer would be so refined by now that production would be incredibly cheap, and integration into the current PCB should only get cheaper over time. With this they have to employ a dedicated team of dozens to try and program emulation that is extremely difficult. While PS2/1 games may seem simple, any sort of emulation is quite difficult. The PS2 already had a funky architecture that gave developers headaches, so I can imagine emulation would be challenging to say the least.

What makes anyone think they' re actually going to make a committed effort to properly emulate PS2 and PS1 software? They' ll make a token effort for a while, cover some of the top-sellers, and then wash their hands of it. And if your PS2 breaks and you still want to play the old games, you' ll have to go buy another one. More money for Sony.

Motion censor gone aswell... http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/02/23/euro_ps3/ London (England) - In an effort to scale back the prohibitive cost of the PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is removing a couple features for the official launch next month. Hardware cut-backs will result in the removal of motion sensitive technology and will limit the backward compatibility of the system. According to a press release issued today, the PS3 model that will be used for the launch in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia, will be backward compatible with a " broad range of original PlayStation (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles." The PS3 launch, which was originally planned to be worldwide, was pushed back for regions that use PAL encoding. The US and Japan use a different format known as NTSC. In the NTSC versions, which debuted last November, it was reported that there was essentially a PS2 embedded into every PS3 console to maximize the compatibility with back-system titles. SCEE says it will continue to update the firmware for PAL consoles to add compatibility with PS2 titles. This is similar to what Microsoft has been doing with the compatibility of Xbox games on the Xbox 360. The debut of the PS3 in PAL regions is scheduled for March 23. The price for most of the area is about 599 euros ($788).

Erm no! Tilt has NOT been removed. Here is the official press-release.... 23/02/2007 10:00 Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces Hardware Specification of PLAYSTATION®3 for Europe London, 23 February 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3â„¢) to be launched in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia on 23rd March 2007 would utilise a new hardware specification. The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engineâ„¢, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXISâ„¢ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles. “PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system,†said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.†Some additional PS2 titles will become compatible on the PS3 system through regular downloadable firmware updates, which will be made available through the PLAYSTATION®Network, from http://www.playstation.com or via PS3 game discs, with the first update planned for the launch date of the 23rd March 2007. Users will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on 23rd March to meet launch day. 1. A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch is required to output 7.1 ch audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector. 2. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel. 3. Usability of all storage media types is not guaranteed. 4. Certain PlayStation 2 format software titles may not perform properly on this system. Granted, but common sense tells you that if Sony had done away with tilt, not only would it be all over every gaming site but they also would be forced to call it something other than Sixaxis making themselves look ridiculous. Anyhoo, nevermind.
