Need help with video cards - techies needed
-
Jan 03, 2007 23:17
I' m planning to get Heroes of Might and Magic V secondhand, problem is my video card is very old, a Radeon 7000. Besides just being low spec, it doesn' t have pixel shader v1.0 (which apparently is used highly in many new games, my Psychonauts couldn' t work for one). The guy selling it to me says he has a 6600GT NVidia card. Is this a higher spec or lower spec card than Radeon 7000? I' m pretty much prepared to run the game at bare minimum specs and lowest graphic settings, but at least I want to run the game

The 6600 card is about 12 -18 months old your card I think is about 18 months plus. What is the rest of the spec of your machine? I am guessing you are running a motherboard with an AGP slot, however do you know if it is agp 2 or above? I would suggest going to the following site to see if you machine will run the game and see what comments it comes back with. http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/system_reqs/popup.php?regopid=2667

LOL, the 6600gt is considered entry level for a gamer but it kills the 7000 series. It' s not even close. the 6600gt is probably 500-1000 times it' s superior. Most onboard GPU' s built into the motherboards these days would rape a an ATI 7000 series card. They' re not even in the same league, it' s like putting a child against the Hulk in a boxing match. Not that a 6600gt is that great but a 7000 series is truely worthless. Shader Model 4 will be used in games in a few months, 6600gt has shader model 3 at least. You keep hearing us talk about Dx10, well the 7000 series is Dx7! The 6600 is dx9, it' s current. How old is that card, I don' t even remember it. It' s actually before my time. If your computer can handle it, i.e. you have mobo and a decent cpu, then you need to upgrade your gpu. The 6600gt would blow your ass away if you' re used to the ancient 7000. In terms of graphic punch it would be like comparing an N64 to a Wii.

In fact I have a 6600gt, its not going to play Crysis on high, but it wroks damn well on most next geny pc games. Includeing Oblivion. You might want to upgrade your ram and stuff like that if your gfx card is that old.

6600 is a very good card for the price and should be able to play that game no problem. But what is in the rest of your PC?
