RE: Afterthoughts about Gears of War (including special amateur review!!!!) - Dec 06, 2006 00:28

And what right does he have to write that review?
BTW: No one plays Gears for its philosophical story.

That' s precisely my point.

I don' t do reviews. I give my opinions on forums and leave it at that but i never sit down and write a review and then give it a score. I leave that kind of thing to journalists.

If the guy hasn' t played the game on varying difficulty levels, on both an SDTV and HDTV (this guys has only played it though on an SDTV), with different speakers to take into account how the sound comes across in say stereo, 2.1, 5.1 etc, and played every mode the game has (co-op), he can' t really be taken seriously.

The score i agree with but i don' t agree with the bulk of what he has written about the game.

I mean...

Isn' t it as good as expected?

NO.

terrible music

while the " story" (there really is no story) elements are lame mostly

Someone at Epic forgot that no matter how real your character looks, it' s all wasted when he or she moves like a doll (in cut-scenes).

While Gears of War looks and sure as hell plays great, it has major problems with audio and overall presentation. Let me put it this way: Sound effects are great, voice acting is great (but the lines try too hard to be as tough as " Bad Dudes Vs Dragon Ninja" ), but the music is fuckin silly/horrible. It' s like it was made for a completely different game. It doesn' t fit - COMPLETELY. It' s like watching fights in Gladiator with soundtrack from the Titanic.

What about the story, this hould be good right?

WRONG!

To sum it up - there' s no story - not a single word to make it as deep and epic experience as we' ve all expected from trailers.

...and yet...

90/100

What' s even more amusing is this quote...

It' s a shame that many editors nowadays don' t remember their console roots and rate games based on visuals alone.

...because if the game has some MAJOR issues then what the fuck are you giving it a 9/10 for?!

Like i said it' s contradicting. Ha, it should also be noted that the same guy thinks Ridge Racer 6 is awesome. I suspect he previously slated Gears on some forum, saying he didn' t know what all the hype was about and can' t face the fact that for most people it has lived up to it and that there are very few problems in the game.

Personally i love Gears, both offline and on but i prefer Rainbow Six: Vegas and i think that Lost Planet is gonna pwn both.

I can' t believe this guy. Has anybody else played the demo? It has to be of the retail version (as opposed to an earlier build), ...what' s wrong with it???

I' ve just experienced the Splinter Cell DEMO and I couldn' t stop myself from telling anyone, who accidentally comes here that IT' S A FUCKIN' DISASTER. This " game" is terrible in every aspect of it' s design. Animations are worse than current gen games, it feels terribly unpolished all over the place and it' s now clear to me that the dark visuals of previos games kept some of it' s not-so-hot looks hidden. This DEMO is not a good way to sell a product. I' m not a huge SC fan - I really liked SC 1 and then it was all the same, but more (I finished Pandoras Tomorrow, but didn' t bother to finish Chaos Theory - which looked better than this demo IMO). By now I' m pretty sure that I can' t be bothered with the Splinter Cell Series. A shame, considering how incredibly improved Rainbow Six is.

TeamXBOX - 91%
IGN - 90%
OXM - 90%
Eurogamer - 90%
GameTrailers - 89%
Gamespot 85%
Gamepro - 85%

Is it just me, ...am i missing something?!

Aside from the fact that he' s basing his impression on a demo alone, is there a level in the game that you could say was a disaster?! Apart from the African level where the framerate is iffy, i can' t recollect a level that i didn' t think was superb. I know i' m Clancy' s (well, Ubisofts) bitch but c' mon!

Nope! All the levels were very mind-blowing, the African level was incredibly
detailed hence the choppy framerate, but nothing really so bad that deterred from
an overall great experience.

- The only problem really with DA is the fact that it was too short..
