My Xbox 360 is officially dead! AGAIN!!! - Nov 21, 2006 06:50
EDIT: My console is now screwed. It isn' t just Gears.

I was playing it half an hour ago and it crashed. I turned the machine off and then back on, loaded the game again, continued the campaign, the level loaded and then zip, it froze again with white vertical lines running down the screen. Again i turned the machine off, disconnected the power supply and left it until it was cool, connected it back to the console and powered up. Same thing.

It only appear to be Gears. I' m checking my other game now. It' s possibly a corrupt save because i just started a new game (overwriting my saved checkpoint) and it appears to be ok.

I' ve read about the vertical line crashes before though and they seem to happen before before things start to get worse. My 360 has never died on me (only frozen a couple of times during PGR3) and to be safe i have deleted my Gears save data on the HDD. It sucks but i' d rather restart the game than try loading a corrupt save again and have it fuck the console.

Anybody else ever had vertical lines like this?!

Yeah I had sometimes moving sometimes not scrolling white lines of dots - I had never seen anything ike it, but it turns out my HD tv was on the way out even though it was brand new it had been damaged in transit and only happened when the tv got up to temperature after about an hour of playing.

I found that switching inputs got rid of the problem temporarily so I could keep playing - as only the component input was affected - but the games themselves did not crash. Could it be that gears is caining the system harder and running it hotter so it is illustrating a weakness with your particular 360?

I dunno. I figured it was a GPU problem at first but it seems to be working now. It crashed repeatedly because i loaded the same save, now i' ve deleted the data i' m hoping it' ll be ok.

It' s only 12 days until i' ve had the thing for a year. Microsoft would replace it for nothing because the manufacture date' s pre-Jan 1st but i' ll be super pissed if it dies on me.

Majik,

i don' t think it got as bad as white dots down the screen but I distinctly remember a watery look stuck to the screen on GRAW just before my first 360 died. You might have seen something like this? Anyway, I hope deleting your save sorts it out - Geras online is awesome, not too complicated but it really highlights the need for good teamwork. And we need to get a quality Kikizo team together. Versus Gears plays very differently to the campaign mode, but both are excellent. Tiz helped through to the end on Casual fairly quickly, and LocoPuyo and I cracked a Berzerker skull on Hardcore today. Sweeeet!!!

Every 360, made before a certain date is designed to fail. They all will, its just a matter of time. Mine did, my second one works well though (so far).

...i now need to find out what number i need to call and go through the bullshit " try this" process over the phone with some idiot. I' m guessing they' ll send me a box to return it in and send me a new one.

Fuck!

Sorry to hear about that Majik. Well, welcome to the club! Like Quez said, they' re really fast about replacing the things so you should be good to go in like a week or so.

As far as the hard drive, I say return it. Yeah, you' ve got a lot of crap on it, I' m sure, but your gamerscore and stats are all saved over XBL, so I wouldn' t worry about that stuff (my profile got corrupted somehow on my hard drive, so I had to download it again from the MS servers. Painless, really.) Getting a system that is sure to work, 100%, is paramount!

Dude, that sucks Majik.[:' (]

(Completely off-topic, but nice TV) Like Quez said, go play it W/O the hard drive, and if your problem is solved then you' re out 100 bucks, and you can ignore the rest of this. However if it gets no better, go out, spend the 8 pounds and get yourself a Datel Data-Transfer Kit or something of that ilk, I dunno if Datel does business in the UK.

But offload your files onto a PC, and send in your hard-drive + console. Worse comes to worse, the whole lot is botched and they send you a new one, and you' ve still got your HDD data. Best of luck man, and oh, by the way, just to get you in the mood for the Microsoft representative:

" Is the console plugged into an outlet?"
" Does the console have a cable running from your TV to your 360"
" Was the console on when you noticed the problem?"

I' ve downloading my profile from XBL.

I don' t know if the thing is screwed or what. It may be ok or it may be dead but since it was a game save that killed it (i' m almost certain because i died, it loaded the checkpoint and crashed) then since i' ve managed to format the HDD then i could be ok.

Right?

After taking ages to download my profile, it rebooted and i got the same vertical lines again. It' s obviously a hardware error and not a save problem afterall.

My problem now is that i no longer have the 3 red lights. It gets to the dash, crashes and vertical lines appear. Will they still replace it?

You have the same thing I had, you won' t need to send in your HDD. But before you call customer service try disconnecting the HDD for 20 minutes and try again after witht eh HDD back on. When I called they wanted me to try that before they would send me the return box. The whole proccess for me took a little over a week and I got a bran new unit at no charge, go Canadian law!

I bought a 360 at EB Games on launch day and paid $50 (canadian) extra for a one year warranty. Today I walked into EB, told them my console was broken (it wasn' t), they gave me a new one I kept my HD and I paid 50 bucks again for the new warranty. Next year I will probably do it again; If you buy a launch unit of any console your crazy not to get rid of it for a new one via warantee. 50 bucks a year and no hassle, consider it with your next console purchase.

Oh yeah, I couldn' t use my mic because I was wearing headphones due to my roomate sleeping.

Ahg my 360 is having the 3 red lights hissy fit now!

It was all workign fine when today I went and bought the HD-DVD. That all worked fine as well til I decided to program the universal remote it came with. During the setup I had accidently shutdown the 360 while the HDDVD drive was open... I freaked and shut it then turned the 360 back on ...and there they were...

Microsoft is saying that what happened to me isn' t a recognized " known issue" and so want me to leave the machine off for an hour and call back and run through another checklist.

I' m getting annoyed now.

Mass, did you fix it yet?

I bet tey' ll replace it, I' ve never heard of any problem with replacing the 360 (as long as you haven' t chipped it). Don' t you have some sort of guarentee? I think ours in Sweden stretches for 2-3 years (not sure) and we are suppousedly allowed to return the machine up to two years after we bought it, no matter what the reason and get our cash back, because the 360 didn' t pass some swedish minimal security checks (can' t guarentte how valid the latter statement is, as it was Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet who wrote that).

Btw: Is it possible to save ones save files under another gamertag?

Also, hope it works out Majik

You guys are awesome!

Y' know, now that it' s finally happened to me, i can see why Gangsta wouldn' t buy a 360 until it was released in Poland and why even then he was bothered about it failing and wanted to wait for a newer version.

I wonder how much Microsoft have lost through having to replace faulty units...

Obviously not enough to rectify the problems. That is one thing I' ve noticed, it' s just little problems that happen every so often. The console freezes, it spits out the disk. It' s not really that bad, but it gets me scared that there' s a recurring problem.

I' m guessing you know this already but here goes: If you got your 360 from a shop, you can just take it back to where you bought it from and they' ll replace it free of charge if it breaks during 12 months warrnty. Well, Game, HMV and the like do anyway.

No need to spend all that money, unless you got yours online, in which case moan at MS and demand a brand new replacement.

Good luck with it dude.

Nope, where I work we keep getting nearly two or three back most weeks as faulty.

Hey dude! Where have you been?!

I got it from Play.com

Microsoft have emailed me some labels and they' re going to replace the unit. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with some super-hot-sounding American girl earlier today and she didn' t ask me to do anything with it. I explained what i' d already tried and she typed it all up.

I' m still buying a new console though. I have a fair amount of store credit at work and so i think i' ll buy the Sonic bundle on Friday. At least if i have two and one fails again i won' t have to go without for a week or two.

Woohoo had my 1 year warrenty still laying around. Went into EB said it dont work they said shitty and gave me a new one and that was that. Got most the stuff updated again just gotta d/l a few things again.

Gonna have to get the Transfer kit so I can backup all my files on my PC incase shit happens again.

[EDIT] This new 360 is a little bit of a bitch...gave me an error message on its first startu just to mock me. Then upon opening the disk tray it spit and sputters in strange and fiendish ways... On top of that I now know what people were talking about when they mentioned lotsa heat...its frightfully scary at times.

However its all still veyr bearable and If anything happens I got a new free 3 month warrenty. Plus I think they may have renewed my eb warrenty due to an error made when I got the origional warrenty.

I damn near had an Xbox 360 scare at 1 am this morning... I inserted the Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 game disc into the system for the first time and got some greyish/off-white screen of doom that instructed me to insert a game disc into the unit. At first I thought maybe I had a defective game disc, then I tried loading up some other games that I played countless amounts of time and I got hit with the same message every time. I thought I had finally screwed up the system by leaving it on for several days. Finally I decided to shut it off for a while and try again later to see if maybe giving it a break might help.. 3 minutes later (yeah, I know, that was some rest period I gave it!) I powered the system on with Smackdown vs. Raw already inserted and voila it loaded up fine. Then I tried Dead Or Alive Xtreme 2 which finally loaded up. Maybe that was the system' s way of telling me to stop leaving it on for weeks at a time???

Sounds good, didn' t realise you got your 360 from play though. I just tend to walk straight past the forums when I' m tired out from a shitty day at work, hence my apparent lacking on the subject.

Anyway with Sonic and probably Gears of War to buy on friday I hope me 360 doesn' t do the same.

Ghost, you didn' t get 3 red lights, it just did the same as what' s happened to mine?!

At one point I had the red lights, sometimes it would give me the fuzzy screen as you have, sometimes it would work but freeze and eventually I couldn' t even turn it on. The one I have now has quirks but still works, the disc tray won' t open sometimes unless i push it in a bit. The 360 is pretty cheap, it looks like its built on the lowest bitter, still love it though.
