why do they always get the funky stuff?

It doesn' t really bother me that much but it doesn' t surprise me at all. Nintendo never released the Panasonic Gamecube which played DVDs outside of Japan. But it couldn' t cost that much extra to put DVD playback into the Wii could it ?

Dissapointing for sure. I wonder how much they' re losing on the DVD player.

Do you mean how much they' re losing sales-wise for not including it in other regions, or how much it costs to include the feature in the unit? Either way, probably not much, and this is annoying. Nintendo could have included the playback feature as the one extra gimmick that could hook a potential buyer. I' m sure it would have gotten someone, especially if they' re aiming for non-gamers.

Oh well.

Is it impossible for Nintendo t release a dongle/firmware update to allow DVD playback? If so its dissapointing that supposedly Japan is the only country getting there hands on this version, although it hasn' t been confirmed whether or not the rest of the world will get this version of the Wii.

If on the otherhad it is possible to unlock DVD functionality then no big deal.
