HD-DVD 360 in the works...
-
Sep 13, 2006 22:09
...or so it appears. LINKY Jimmy Hsu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 13 September 2006] Microsoft has started designing a new-generation of Xbox 360' s equipped with an internal HD-DVD drive and is selecting manufacturers in Taiwan to build the drive, according to sources in Taiwan' s optical disc drive (ODD) industry. Microsoft will offer an external HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 at around the end of this year, in an attempt to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will have a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive, the sources indicated. The external HD-DVD drive, however, can only play back movies, the sources noted. If the process of selecting partner makers and subsequent certification goes smoothly, Microsoft may launch the Xbox 360 equipped with the built-in HD-DVD drive in the first half of 2007 at the soonest, the sources noted. Remember the rumour of a black HDMI enabled 360 equipped with a 250GB HDD, full wireless connectivity and HD-DVD drive?! Well, it could be true, as most Microsoft orientated rumours are.

I' m pretty sure it' s bullshit - while HD DVD 360 could be released someday , it won' t use HDDVD for games - this would be a terrible move against people who already own one.

Ok, this seems to be the first step to many more disabled and stupid runs. I hope that it just stops at the 360 with a built in HD-DVD drive still only able to play movies. But alas, I do smell the hint of HD games.. It' s not bad if they only have it playing movies, to incorporate games into it is commercial suicide.

I don' t see the problem personally i' d buy it so long as they don' t go hd-dvd games this gen it' s fine by me.

Yeah, there' s no problem if it' s only for movies, but think about if they made it for games eventually? I hope they don' t do that.

Thats what i' m saying as long as it' s movies orientated and not focused on pushing hd-dvd incorporated games into the mainstream then it' s fine and somehow I don' t think they' ll be doing that (at least I hope not).

I think the 360 with the HD-DVD add on is going to look ugly set up in a home theater system. Most addons do, if it is true thats pretty shitty.

Actually my home theater setup is quaint...if you could even call it a home theater system. The shelf is pretty adjustable so theres alot of ventilation room. I' m off topic now...

I' m just thinking if they make HD-DVD games, like Halo 3, it would be hard for me to make fun of Sony for screwing their fans over so much. I hope they stick just to movies, otherwise, well, I' ll just have to buy the new 360 and shut my mouth I suppose.

If Microsoft do this for games as well as movies, they might as well take out a polished Sony-labelled Battering Ram and shove it up their ass and shut the f*ck up and call it even.

they' ve denied every rumor like this one (and it' s not the first and definitely not the second time) and it makes sense. Their " choice" direction actually makes sense.

It wouldn' t make any sense to go for gaming, but I might just trade mine in if it had DVR. Doubt it though, breaking it up into 3 different units wouldn' t make much sense, unless they killed the core that is. hmm... who do you know that actually bought one out of choice?
