360 freed from Media Centre PC' s - Sep 08, 2006 05:07

Microsoft has announced a rework of its Media Player for Windows that will allow Xbox 360 users to stream content to their off-shiny white games machines, freeing the delivery of such media from the shackles of Windows XP Media Edition.

As you may be aware, Microsoft locked the ability to view movies and listen to music from your PC via its new console to its unpopular ' lifestyle' operating system. A new deployment of Windows Media Player 11 features a mode called Media Sharing that will, in time, open up your shady world of dark pornography, songs from the mid-80s and other sordid secrets to other areas of your home.

Although the beta version of the updated Windows Media Player is available now, you' ll have to wait for an update to the dashboard - to be made available via Live - before the changes take place

They should let you plug it right into xp, ah but no, keep it for Vista. This way more people will be forced to buy it.

Uh... pretty sure the entire point of this article is that it will work with regular XP. The vista streaming has been known about for a long time. This article sums up that with the new Media Player (which you can download the beta version of now- I have it) and the update that will be coming out for the 360 that you' ll be able to steam rightoff your regular computer, no sepcial operating system required. All of it is free, you don' t have to buy anything.

Well I assmued the Windows Media player 11 would be ' Vista exculsive' since its in Beta now and not fully functioning.

Vista was problematic during the Beta stages, but the latest RC1 is looking to be very nice and stable indeed. Miles ahead of the earlier betas.

Back on topic and it looks like the 360 won' t be freed from Windows MCE yet. However Vista is a different story. If you do have Vista Home Premium/Ultimate, you can stream video to your 360. It just looks like XP is getting shafted still.

gut rot. I thought that was a bit odd for them to all of a sudden support video streaming.

I hope this is true I dont see why they would make WMP Vista exclusive after always releasing WMP for download. Still sucks that we have to wait till november for this update. This should have already been a feature on the system.
