That' s what they said initially. Hasn' t been mentioned since and there are no details concerning region specifics in the official spec sheet.

Plus, i wouldn' t exactly fancy risking importing it as a) i wouldn' t have a valid warranty, b) would have to risk the possibility of it being damaged in shipping, c) would have to pay a premium import tax when it got to my door, d) would have to piss about with voltage adapters, and e) would have to import every Blu-Ray movie as they will be region encoded.

It' s hardly worth it for the sake of £425, which i might whine about but really isn' t all that much to me for a new games console. I spent the best part of a grand when i bought my 360 and there aren' t loads of games i want for PS3 that' ll be there at launch.

I have US versions of DoA4 and RR6 so yeah i know the console isn' t region locked but Sony has said that all PS3 games will be region free and it' ll only be region locked for movies.

Personally i don' t believe it. Publishers like the monopoly they have in Europe. Saying that, PSP games are completely region free so it' s possible.

Wii is supposed to have region encoding (if it' s going to have any) in it' s upgradable firmware and Nintendo said they realise that part of DS' es succes was it' s global approach.I hate those region blockades.

Since all games are in HD now , it' s easier to make them multiregion.No Pal/NTSC bullshit.

Here in Australia they are only selling the Top end version and it goes for AUS$999 which is around US$750, not bad compared to some countries. For comparison the 360 goes for around AUS$650 which is around US$450. So the ps3 we see a mark up of up to US$150 or 20% compared to xbox' s markup of US$50 or 12.5%. I' d like to see others comparitive calculations on price mark up compared to the Recommended US prices, it be interesting to see the premium one must pay to own a ps3 in countries other then the US.

To me the higher premium screams lower then expected number of units available at launch, and sony merely recouping the high losses in less important countries (like Australia which usually gets things last). That estimate of sony only able to make 3 million ps3 by the end of the financial year, instead of the 6 million they projected, the fact that with two & a half months left till launch (kaz stated) they still have not started manufacturing ps3s, problems with low cell yields and sony ' hogging' all the blu ray diodes for ps3 points heavily to a severe ps3 shortage. A world wide launch seems a more difficult promise for sony to achieve.

Fact of the matter is that both Japan and US are the 2 key markets that win the ' console wars' , the other markets are just icing on the cake. We can wish these multinational companies cared equally about each market, but then we would be kidding ourselves. Europe and the rest of the world simply take units away from more important markets (ie US & Japan), and thus a ' premium' must be paid, or at least thats how i see it (i usually takes up to 6 months after US launch before we see our first console, though 360 came a little sooner at about 4 or so months).

One thing i' m not to sure about is the US$600 include taxes or is it before taxes. COnsidering the up US$300 sony will lose per console sold i would be surprised if the price includes taxes, but stranger things could happen. Does anyone know for certain?

I doubt something as big as PS3 would be advertised as a set price including taxes since there are hundreds of cities with different tax rates (many cities in the US dont even have any sales taxes at all), not to mention I' ve never seen anything besides food having a price that included taxes.

It works out the same expenditure, and would be roughly the same percentage out of the average wages.

American' s on average earn less but things cost less. We earn more but things cost more. If i translated the US price ($599) into GBP then it works out at £314 which is just over a weeks wage.
