Ps3, the cancer curing system?
-
Aug 25, 2006 01:27
Now i' ve heard the PS3 will do a lot, especially by the fanboys, but this has to be the most out there of all of them... ORIGINAL: Joystiq File this under " strange but true." In conjunction with Stanford University' s Folding@home project, PlayStation 3 owners who leave their consoles connected to the internet can lend their extra horespower to running calculations and study various proteins. So far the project has made numerous discoveries, and the long-term goals include finding cures for Alzheimer' s Disease, Huntington' s Disease, and certain forms of cancer. For those of you who don' t care about humanity' s survival, every PS3 user who runs the program gets a visualization program of the folding process, complete with HDR lighting. You can check out videos via the bottom of the FAQ. Next time you' re throwing a party and need some killer visuals, hook up a PS3, put on some Electronica, and have yourself a life-saving rave!

I run a similar application on my PC. It' s a good cause. But I don' t think I' d leave a console on and connected to the internet all the time.

It' s the main IDEA behind the Cell processor - that' s how they promoted it. They said that computers with Cell can lend power to others over the network - some calculations and shit. It doesn' t mean that PS3 is the uber power though :)

Yeah i remember about sharing processing power around. Didn' t really expect anything to come from it though, and no it doesn' t mean it' s uber powerful, but it' s something.

Pffft. The Xbox360 can cure cancer AND download a patch to an incomplete game simultaneously! The PS3 can' t do anything else while curing cancer. What a wimpy system!!

Unless Sony is allowing homebrew apps, how are they going to distribute it?

PS3 can cure cancer though...

Piracy is good! Aye! Shiver me Bittorrent! This is mildly outrageous, definately plausible, and completely ridiculous, all at the same time! It better be able to cure acute paranoia, because Sony is sounding more and more like a certain company from a certain game, a company that rhymes with " fumbrella shmorporation" .

So is anybody here going to do this? I' ll will give it a try one or twice, and see how it goes, if its easy to start and stop then I could leave it on when I am downloading something or the like, nothing major, just doing my bid to save humanity, what did you do today?. I think its great becuase this will be a huge help to the research, Imagine, millions of ps3' s doing this. However if they make you pay, I doubt anybody will use it! " lame ass 360 cant do this, It would give the wrong answer and screw it up!" - Ken

Technically it does cost to run this program. Electricity. There was some article about how much more power 360 (or next gen systems) consumes over current/last gen hardware.

It' s like, the ultimate in nitpicking. When fanboys run out of fodder, they can always fall back on the " my console is more energy efficient than yours!"

I wonder how the uk law thing that doesn' t allow stand-by on electronic products will affect consoles?

I saw this, but the PC was still like 20 times more. Although, the PC isn' t a purely gaming machine, so that' s a handicap.
