The Games That Changed From Announcement To Retail - Aug 03, 2006 08:27
Games evolve during development, that' s a given, but do you remember a game that looked completely different when it was announced to what made retail?!

I do, ...Resident Evil 4!

See when the game was first shown it looked like this...

...then we saw what Leon would look like...

...and the first gameplay shots show showed what appeared to be a traditional RE game. It looked more like the RE remake than anything...

...then the game was totally resigned and because a fully 3D 3rd person title, ...featuring ghosts??? ...

...and then the ghost idea was dropped and for better or worse the game became what we know and love today...

Anybody remember any others?!

X-com:Enforcer, in the x-com series was orginally inteded as a FPS game like Rainbow Six, just against aliens in UFO' s, including basebuilding and weapons research like in the original two.

but instead they made a crappy action shooter that looked like this

When Nintendo first announced a new Zelda game for the Gamecube they showed shots that looked awesome. It looked like Twilight Princess. I can' t find the shots though.
But then, all of a sudden, they showed Windwaker. A very different game. Lots of people were very disappointed since they were expecting the more mature game.

I don' t know the truth about what happened with the game but my theory is that Twilight Princess actually is the game they showed before Windwaker was announced.
But Nintendo knew that they would never finish the awesome game in time so they made Windwaker in order to get at least one Zelda game out on the market. And that let them put more time on the " real" Zelda game when Windwaker was finished. And that game became Twilight Princess.

Or does anyone know what really happened?

Oblivions dynamic shadow system was just to amazing and to much cpu hugging to work on a high end pc or a 360.
Even if you break 2 legs from a crab it still runs!
What you gotta do is find its weak spot and do massive damage at it.

I remember those RE4 images. I never played RE4 but i was looking forward to play the first version it really caught my attention.

Other game that changed a lot was Shenmue. Who doesn´t remember the saturn version video thatwas on the Xbox version of Shenmue 2? There were many changes in there.

The secret dojo compartiment was some sort of a bunker in the ground.

The guy Capcom are using as a character in Lost Planet is a famous Korean (i think) actor. Same thing with some of Onimusha' s chatacters.

Yes... About 3 days ago! Received my complimentary bottle of wine in the post
yesterday.

I found it funny because, when you see a video game character outside in the
real life world.. There' s a slight void of " insanity" where you' re like " heehahahoho"
I know he was a real actor, but I saw him first in videogames.

It' s the same thing as if Sonic were to appear on my front door saying " Special
delivery..... Chilli dawgs.." I would laugh for years and years!

I can see that one 360/pc game that is yet to be released change dramatically before release. A demo came out that I bet no one here even gave it the time of day, it sucked so much that Atari dropped the game entirely. Vivendi Universal Games picked it up and seems to be working some magic with the game. When Atari had Timeshift the game looked like a mediocre shooter with a gimick (time shifting weapons). Now after Vivendi has been reworking the game it looks much more promissing.

Actually, I was wondering more why the heck won' t that woman DIE!? I saw her get stabbed, like THREE TIMES, IN A ROW. And after very stab attack, she falls to the ground, says something touching, then doesn' t move. BUT SHE COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Gawd, I can' t even remember whether she really DOES die at the movie' s end!

Anyway, IMO, Leon looks WAY too much like Squall from FFVIII.

Same hairstyle, same pale face, same fur-collar, they both have the word Leon in their names (Leon, and Squall Leonhart anyone?)

Yeah, I' m surprised noone else saw this...

Dead Rising is a fairly recent one, if you look at earlier screenshots it is apparent that Frank was the ugliest character ever made. And the game originally was like N3 (All the zombies were the same). But Frank got a facial redesign and the zombies got some diversity.

Well here is one then I saw on Joystiq. Okami or ohkami...

Article

Video Comparison

i think the original looks very nice and prefer it for the simple fact the greenery the wolf creates turns to forests that stay put, unlike in the current version. I remember when i first heard of the game, this is what i heard about and it sounded way cool, was disappointed when it never happened as such in the japanese version i played.
