Gears of War ran on single thread at E3 - Jul 27, 2006 03:37

Not too bad to say the least.

And speaking of Epic games in development, while 360 action title Gears of War was undoubtedly one of the more visually amazing titles on show during May' s gaming spectacular, Rein promised that improved tech will mean that the final version will raise the bar still further.

" was using our single-threaded renderer. We have our new Gemini multi-threaded renderer working in the engine right now," Rein explained. " The final game' s built on it, it gives us better frame rates and more fluidity - UT 2007 will also benefit from it. It only gets better from here. So if you were impressed with Gears of War at E3, the finished game' s going to be much better, it' s going to be spectacular."

£10.00 bet they go for 30fps and more particle effects and bigger explosion and
more rps on the chainsaw. They' ll also give Marcus more muscle as well.

I think they' ll really go all out to impress. On a side note have you guys seen the grainy but visable screen shots of blue dragon I don' t know why but just looking at them sorta gives me a good feeling about the game.

Whilst BD looks a bit kiddy, I wanna see more in-game stuff before I make a
clear judgement, that, and I pray both this and LO are not turn-based..

Or at least not generically turn-based..

Yea more in game would be good but I kinda had the feeling they were holding off to either make them have more of an impact coming up to launch or they haven' t really finished everything yet. I dunno about lost oddysey yet but have high hopes for bd.

Both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are turn based, but with revolutionary twists.

Just expect to be able to run around freely while you are fighting that much I' m sure of.

There will be a lot to mess around with in both blue dragon and lost odyssey as far as battle is concerned. Blue Dragon in my opinion is one of the 360' s more impressive looking games ignoring the crappy photos taken and the june 30th 2005 screenshots Microsoft released during E3 of this year. (Those screens are indeed as old as June 30th)

Blue Dragon is going to be extremely impressive and so will Lost Odyssey.

AS LONG AS EVERYBODY REALISES THAT HE' S NOT TALKING ABOUT THE GRAPHICS GETTING ANY BETTER THEN I DON' T HAVE TO BASH ANYBODY.

This specifically concerns framerate, collision detection, AI, geometry etc... all of which are handled by the processor.

Xenon has 3 cores and each core has 2 threads. All 3 cores were/are being used and Epic were simply only using one thread per core.

All this means is that now they' ve moved over to using all 6 threads the framerate, AI and everything handled specifically by the processor will all improve in performance.

(note that this also means that the game is done graphically and Epic have begun tweaking everything and working the bugs out)

For a game like Gears of War, the GPU will be the bigger factor in deciding how many frames per second it will do. 1000$ says it will target 30 fps.

The dev of Devil may cry said in feb that a 360 version of DMC4 might happend, but later he denied it would come in march, however he then speculated about making a DMC3 special eidition with power of 360.

If that game is still in plans/dev i have no idea.

For a game like Gears of War, the GPU will be the bigger factor in deciding how many frames per second it will do.

Well in the sense that having a game that has ultra hi-res textures, shitloads of normal mapping and spherical harmonic lighting would affect the framerate as far as limiting it, then yeah.

But like most engines, Unreal Engine 3.0 will have/has an ingrain rendering solution that handles the framerate, ...and that' s what Rein was talking about in his video interview when he said...

" ...We have our new Gemini multi-threaded renderer working in the engine right now... ...The final game' s built on it, it gives us better frame rates and more fluidity - UT 2007 will also benefit from it. It only gets better from here..."

1000$ says it will target 30 fps

As long as they cap it then i don' t mind. The game isn' t very fast paced and obviously capping the framerate at 30 will allow for more pretty effects and graphical touches.

The only thing that would possibly concern me is the multi-player running at 30fps. I' m not sure whether it' d make a difference or not. One of the things i love about GRAW' s coop/online is that it' s a solid 60fps, ...i don' t even mind the graphical drop from the solo campaign.

Still, Epic will definately have UT2007 at 60 so there' s got to be hope for Gears.

I could live with it running at 30 fps if it meant nicer effects. I' d like to see multiplayer running at 60fps though. It' s not like you' re really going to stop and oggle at pretty effects when you' re in the middle of a deathmatch right?

Yeah I have nothing against a 30fps cap, infact I prefer it if it means you get better effects. I hate when people bitch about fps on consoles. PGR3 had a 30 fps cap and it was perfect.

The problem comes when developers don' t cap the framerate and even if it' s over 30 at all times, when it drops it' s instantly noticable.

As for Gears, i seriously don' t think it' s possible (right now) to have this...

...running at 60fps.

As for the multi-player, i can' t see a graphical drop from the main game but maybe you guys can...
