also worth mentioning teh sony memory stick is being kept afloat by the psp too...

usb / flash stick variants completely anhilate it for sales

you know, maybe if they would have allowed other companies to release players for the things, and budget priced the actual UMD' s, maybe, MAYBE the format could have survived.

honestly, it' s like no one at Sony knew how many portable DVD players were already on the market.

If they insist on using movie playback as selling point for the psp, then the smarter thing to do would be to work some industry magic (liscense-wise) and get some official software that lets you transfer your OWN DVD' s to a memory card to be played on psp.
