Opera web browser for Wii
-
May 11, 2006 16:52
http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/index.php/id;1168785635 Opera will come included with Wii. This is pretty awesome, they coulda just made their own mediocre web browser or used used a mediocre firefox browser but instead they are having the best web browser there is, Opera. If you' ve ever used the mouse gestures for Opera you' d realize the kind of things they could do with the Wii controllers. Hopefully you can use a real keyboard for typing though. I really wish there was a web browser for xbox 360....I suppose they are too afraid of how it would make piracy easier.

yeah since Wii remote has all the pointing functions of a mouse browsing web should be fun and easy - it would be easier on an HD system though from visual perspective.

Wow, I didn' t expect this. I really hope they release a real keyboard and don' t use a DS-like letter-selection screen. I wonder how much the keyboard would cost. Does anyone remember how much the keyboard Gamecube controller that they released for Phantasy Star cost?

If you can' t just use a regular USB keyboard you could probably buy a Wii one for $15 or $20 like you could on dreamcast. Or a USB to Wii wireless type adapter. They' ll probably have one in some way.

and if you can' t buy one for whatever input port nintendo has, how long do you think it' ll take for lik-sang to turn out an adapter, I' ll bet it won' t be that expensive. keyboards can only cost so much.

Well the only thing you really have to worry about is if Opera on Wii supports it or not. It does you no good to have one if you can' t use it.

You might have already seen this but I just wanted your opinion on something. http://revolution.ign.com/articles/709/709705p1.aspx In the interview, this is what is said about the keyboard situation The Wii remote control is an extremely advanced tool. Opera plans to use this to its full advantage and it will provide an intuitive way to surf the Web. Imagine the possibilities in terms of surfing with a motion sensitive remote control. I cannot specifically comment on the lack of keyboard, but many devices running Opera don' t have keyboards, such as the Nintendo DS, and feature on-screen keyboards to solve this problem. So that seems to discount partially the chances of a keyboard, but what do you think of selecting letters off the screen with the Wiimote (since that seems to be the only available option)? I might be visualizing it wrong, but it doesn' t seem very intuitive, and would require pinpoint accuracy to prevent poor spelling.

I don' t think it would be that great of an expierience if to write long forum posts on your Wii browser, since typing is probably a little slow (if it will be this kind of onscreen keyboard). But for typing in an URL and then browsing away from there, like clicking on links with the Wiimote - that could be kind of cool. You can sit on your couch while doing that, you know.
