It' s such a shame that torrents and p2p are abused so much for blatent piracy and theft. I never understood how they' re allowed to get away with it. I used to use it for that when I was 12, but not since I understood how bad a problem it is. It' s just lack of understanding really, especially as it' s the easiest form of theft ever invented.
Most people dont steal when they' re a certain young age because they' re afraid of getting caught, not cause they understand about property ownership, not having everything for free just cos you want it etc. So the complete anonymity of it is just too appealing. It' s a bit of an abstract concept to teach kids also, so the only way to stop it is to somehow prosecute anyone found seeding illegal files, without breaching people' s privacy. Hmm, an impossible task?
Torrents are useful for stuff other than piracy though. It' s great that small sites that can' t afford large bandwidth usage can use it to spread the load off their servers. My friend' s small developer site uses it to distribute its free game.
I also find it useful to get rare stuff I can' t find here in the UK, like TV shows that never get shown here or that one old episode of Ren & Stimpy, Dangermouse or Transformers that I know I can' t buy anymore.
