Old school Adventure Games - Feb 11, 2006 02:01
Any of you guys play the adventure game genre, like the SCUMM games, and broken sword.

My absolutte favorite is The Longest Journey, a follow up is imminent for the Xbox and PC, its called DreamFall

Which are your favorites?

I was really into adventure games before when the likes of Secret of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis were out. Loved those games.

The new Longest Journey did perk my interest, but these days I cant get into adventures for some reason, I dunno why. Didnt like that Myst V demo very much.

My friend made the sound for a cool 2d point and click anime, silent hill style horror game a while back which was actually quite well received and got mentions in some respectable places. The White Chamber was its name. Although short, I thought it was very cool....and it was free to d/l too.

Broken sword 1 and 2,however the part with the goat in BR1 made no sense what so ever.
Anyway...
Cant wait for bs4 which gonna be in 3d but still with point and click.
Even if you break 2 legs from a crab it still runs!
What you gotta do is find its weak spot and do massive damage at it.

Easy; Sam and Max. Gotta love that psychotic bunny. Plus I have nephews names Sam and Max now too.

(Joint) second place goes to Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle.

Ahhh, LucasArts, why don' t you make good games anymore... sigh.

flashback / another world - they rocked!

I remember looking at the previews thinking it looked almost real!

As for SMS it' s done, but not compatible with the current GTA / Eloader / 2.01+ PSP' s so am part of a very long line of people (but at least im waiting patiently!)

Ah ok...

Yeah, i have Flashback on one of my PSP' s, i seriously love that game!

I have Killer Instinct on there too but now when i wanna play a fighting game while i' m out, i have to choose which PSP to use because on one i have loads of emulators, but for the other i bought Street Fighter Alpha 3...

Decisions suck!

Have you played Full Throttle?

It came before the Dig and is even cooler - it' s got the same style and presentation.

Yeah, i played full throttle and i have the cd case and cd-rom stiill. I also have Sam and Max, and day of the tentacle, all great SCUMM games. I found Full Throttle a bit too easy compared to some of the others. DOTT had great humor, im Just a SCUMM game fan :)

Beavis & Butthead not because it' s good, but it gives me tingly nostalgic feelings.
The Animaniac' s Game, because it' s far better than this Great Edgar Hunt bull crap.
(I mean come on it' s been how many years since something animaniacs came out and
now they screw it up. sigh... at least there' s the DVD release later this year)
and Sam & Max, ya just don' t get humor like this anymore. (**** you Lucasarts for
cancelling Freelance Police. Bless you Telltale for continuing the legacy.)

Ok, if we are talking about old school adventure games, let' s at least talk about the good ones. Kings Quest 1, 3, 4, and 5 were awesome. Quest for Glory 1-4 also awesome. Any spacequest game is pure gold, and Leisure suit Larry 1 is a classic.

Fair enough liking summat different; brings some variety to the topic. But do you actually dislike what others have mentioned before (particularly the LucasArts stuff)?

(Just interested to know why, if you don' t like ' em.)

I like both the Lucasarts games and the Sierra games. The westwoods games were also good, Legend of Kyrania!

Old School? *Yawn*

heh, not really, but i am too young to experiance the ' magic' of yesteryears classic gaming machines. and games.
To be honest i dont see why people think those games are really great, yes they where the only thing you had back then, yes maybe the gameplay is great, yes maybe the high score of " AAA" will never to bet. Put everything has been bettered hugely since those days by modern games, yet people still remember fondly back to the days of " real" games, these are the people who have stopped modern gaming and decided to stay in the 70' s with their pac man cab.

I cannot understand those people.

[i dont know if that was off topic or not]
Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.

Viva La Revolution! erm, I mean Viva La Wii!

I didn' t mind the lucasarts stuff, my favorite being Indianna Jones and the Last Crusade, I just liked the Sierra stuff more. A lot of it has to do with the fact that Sierra would often play off of inside jokes between games, so if you were a big space quest fan, and you were playing a Leisure suit Larry game, all of a sudden there' d be a Roger Wilco joke that would crack you up. And Quest for Glory was kind of like a mix between adventure and RPG, but basically it' s Kings' Quest with a combat system, but the fightings really secondary.

That' s true for most genres, but the old point n click adventure games just don' t get made anymore. The Sierra/LucasArts period was the pinacle for the genre - and those games have never since been bettered.

There' ve been a few decent attempts since the mid 90s, but you could count them on one hand.
