My first impression of Shenmue was 7.5 out of 10..
It' s got a good story, So good that one of the idiotic reviewers of Japan' s gaming bible, Famitsu, knocked the score down because he thought that the story was " Too Strong" . At the time that was about the dumbest thing I' ve ever read from a game reviewer.
The QTE events were nice, and I liked how all of the NPCs throughout the city went about their daily routines.
Anyways, as great as the original Shenmue is, the game isn' t without some minor flaws.
Sometimes, maneuvering Ryo isn' t as great as it should be. The game controls well overall but there are times when simply turning can be a bit of an exercise. The controls just felt a tad bit stiff.
The game also has quite a few time based elements that are cool and at the same time a pain sometimes.
But the biggest reason for the 7.5 is because Ryo never changes his clothes. He wears the same damn jacket every day!
Anyways my final impression of the original Shenmue would have me scoring it around an 8.3/10. There was definitely room for improvement and Shenmue II was it and gets a higher grade no doubt. I' d give Shenmue II a 9.4/10, the end of Disc 3 alone was AMAZING! At the time that I completed Shenmue II, I hadn' t been as pumped up, excited, and exhilarated by a game in such a way for a long time.
