Gamestop to buy out Electronic Boutique
-
Apr 19, 2005 09:40
http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200504/N05.0418.1910.06795.htm Today GameStop announced it would buy competitor Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp. for $1.44 billion in cash and stock. The combination of these two companies would amount to 3,200 stores in the United States and 600 stores abroad. The aquisition would make GameStop a larger videogame retailer than competitor Wal-Mart. Electronics Boutique shareholders will receive $38.15 in cash and 0.78795 shares of GameStop Class A common stock for each Electronics Boutique share, the companies said. Wow, that' s pretty big. I hope this doesn' t mean reduced trade in value now that Gamestop has almost zero competition from other videogame stores.

The only thing that EB has over Gamestop is the " C" titles. What I mean is that EB gets most, if not all, " C" level games - mostly games that get little (if any) advertisement time and are expected to be sold at a budget price. Gamestop has few stores that actually get " C" titles on release day. Other than that, I for the EB buyout by Gamestop...

They' ll just start buying out all the smaller mom & pop stores and probably get some sort of exclusivity deal going with many of the distribution channels their other competitors use ;)

Even if Gamestop buys out EB, there are still many local competitors like Game Exchange, Slackers, Game Force... I didn' t really bother with EB too much anyway...they just seemed to be the cheap version of Gamestop.
